Why is my 3-month-old kitten sneezing with strange breathing sounds?

3month old kitten sneezing, breathing withouth open, breathing sounds like someone snoring and you wake them up fast and they make funny throat sound. Best way to describe it

Unfortunately kittens are susceptible to many viruses that infect the respiratory tract and can cause noise, running eyes and noses and general ill health. There is little to do for a virus aside from administering antinflammatories which you would need to have prescribed by a vet. However I would recommend taking the kitten in for an exam as the viruses can make way for bacterial infection and the vet can give antibiotics if needed. In the mean time keep the kitten in stress and draught free environment.

This is probably an upper respiratory infection. it's very common in young cats and is very contagious to other cats as well.

It is treated with oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. I advise going to your vet asap to start the treatment right away.

Sneezing can be a sign of a respiratory infection in a young cat, or allergies, but also a foreign body in the nasal passages. If your kitten's sneezing hasn't improved by tomorrow, I would recommend calling your vet when they open tomorrow for an exam. They can try to look into her nostrils to be sure there isn't a small foreign body causing irritation, and give her medication if needed to treat infection or decrease inflammation in the nasal passages. Tonight you can try putting her into a bathroom while you run a steamy shower fpr 10 or 15 minutes and see if that provides any improvement.

Was your kitten ever examined for nasopharyngeal polyps? There is a possibility that your kitty has a polyp in the area that connects the nose with the mouth. These polyps can grow big and fill out the cavity and cause signs that resemble upper respiratory infections without the infection. Snoring is another sign. Why is my new kitten making noisy breathing sounds after adoption?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds as though he might be congested. An upper respiratory tract infection (URI) due to a viral or bacterial infection is the most common reason for congestion in kittens. Common signs of a URI are: congestion, raspy throat breathing, nasal or eye discharge, sneezing and coughing. Herpes virus is the most common cause and usually runs it's course but it can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. If the nasal discharge is yellow or green, he is lethargic and not eating well that indicates a need to be seen by your Vet. If he is eating and drinking then you can watch him since it has only been 2 days since you adopted him. If his symptoms persist for a week or more then he should be seen. Have a good day!

My kitten is sneezing, runny nose, and struggling to breathe. Home care?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pongkoy! Most upper respiratory infections in cats are viral. If the discharge from his nose is clear then you can just monitor him. Hopefully he can clear the viral infection. If he is lethargic, not eating, and/or the discharge changes to yellow or green he would need to see a Veterinarian for antibiotics. I would clear his nose a couple of times a day and you can keep him in a steamy bathroom twice a day for 10-15 mins. Be sure that you start Pongkoys kitten vaccinations in the next 1-2 weeks. Yes, I would definitely take Smokey into the vet, as it's not normal for a kitten to breath through their mouth. It sounds like she is quite congested, and I can give you a home remedy to try to help that. Please know that it should not replace a visit to the vet, as she may benefit from medications to help with her symptoms. I would take her into the vet in the morning. Tonight, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

My kitten keeps sneezing after vet check. Should I be worried?

Cats can commonly be afflicted by upper respiratory viruses that can cause sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. These viruses can be latent in a cat's system and then in times of stress or a weakened immune system (like in a kitten) they can cause illness. This is what I suspect is going on with your cat. Oftentimes cats can overcome a viral respiratory infection on their own but sometimes they need antiviral drugs, eye medications, and possibly antibiotics to help them get over the virus. If the illness continues to last more than 3-5 days, of if Mushu stops eating or the sneezing becomes excessive then I would take him back to the vet for a recheck. Most times these cats just need supportive care to get through the illness.

I'd be a bit worried about Pringels. I can give you some things you can do for him at home. First, you can try starting him on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If he's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. If his symptoms get worse or continue, have him seen by a vet.
