My kitten has a cold and eye infection. What are the next steps?

If it is bacterial in nature, antibiotics may be indicated. If it is viral, supportive care and possibly antibiotics to teat or prevent secondary infections my be indicated. You can have Coco seen by your veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and treatment, Use a warm washcloth to keep the eyes and nose clear. Make sure she continues to eat and drink to prevent dehydration.

Eye infections in kittens are usually caused by a virus and is best treated with antibiotics and sometimes antiviral medications and supplements such as Lysine. Sometimes these infections can cause the kitten to rub excessively around the eyes which can cause the area around the eye to become very red and inflamed. Batshiva does really need to see a veterinarian for this so she can get properly treated. Eye infections can lead to lead to more serious conditions or the eye so it is best that she is seen sooner rather than later. I hope this helps and I hope she can see a veterinarian soon!

While you should take her to the vet next week for a check up and to update any needed preventive care you can give her 500mg of Lysine twice daily. You can usually find this product in pet stores or online. Humans take it too but the cat formulas are likely more palatable. I hope this helps!

Clavamox is often used for routine symptoms, but the eyes should be checked immediately for corneal ulcers, as these are quite complicated and need specific eye medications.

Just like with humans, these guys require antibiotic eyedrops which you will need to get from the veterinarian. I recommend to call your clinic and make an appointment ideally today. Eye infections in young kittens can become serious and cause permanent damage to the corneas. Bring the whole litter and the mother. Certainly cleaning off the teats and the rest of the environment will help but all the kittens have been exposed at this point. It also sounds like she has a respiratory infection. I would have a vet on call or an ER vet see her right away. The vet can prescribe her medications for her symptoms to treat them. In conjunction with the medications from the vet, I can give you some things to try at home. Please know that these will not cure the eye infection, nor can they be used as a substitute for seeing the vet. It's extremely important Tiny is treated for her eye infection ASAP. At home, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.
