My new kitten has an eye cold. What can I do before a vet visit?

Congratulations on adding Khloe to your family! Many kittens come with colds that are caused by viruses. At home you need to make sure she is eating a balanced, high quality kitten food. Make sure she is drinking water and that she is not having a lot of stress (like being chased around by kids or dogs). You can generally find vitamin supplements at pet stores as well as lysine-both of which can help support her immune system. As long as she is bright, playful and eating well, you are probably fine to wait til your vet appointment. If she begins to show signs of illness, then call the vet to see if you can get in sooner. Kitten needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Many cats will get viral infections that cause sneezing and upper respiratory symptoms. Some of these kittens will get viral infections that also affect the eye and can cause painful ulcers which can progress and dive deeper into the eye (which is not good). Lysine supplements for cats may help with viral infections in general but your kitten still needs to be examined today. The doctor needs to check the eye for an ulcer, scratch or perhaps a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. You must also protect the eye from any scratching with an elizabethan collar. Hopefully she can fight this infection and make a speedy recovery! I would recommend using a Lysine supplement for Hera. You can find Lysine for cats online or at a local pet store. One product we use at our clinic is called Duralactin with Lysine paste. I use this in conjunction with an antibiotic but if you are unable to get her to a vet, then starting Lysine is better than nothing. I hope this helps! It depends on if the cause of the cold is bacterial or viral. If it's bacterial, antibiotics. If it's viral, then supportive care because antibiotics do not work on viruses.
