My Persian kitten is lethargic with an eye infection. What to do?

Squinting typically means the eye is painful as does the lethargy. From your pictures, the underside of the eyelid appears swollen and his third eyelid is elevated. He could have an eye infection. It can happen alone or be part of an upper respiratory tract infection. He may start with other symptoms such as sneezing and a decreased appetite. Another possibility is a corneal ulcer or scratch across the surface of the eye. This is very painful. The doctor will examine him and may recommend a test to look for an ulcer. Based o these results, treatment will be started. I hope this information helps!

From your description, it sounds like Ivory isn't feeling well at the moment, and his symptoms could be indicating a possible respiratory infection. Make sure he is eating and drinking, keep him warm, and bring him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower, The steam may help with his breathing and clear up any congestion. Take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Now if he won't eat or drink, he appears to be in respiratory distress (difficulty breathing), and/or becomes very lethargic, I would take him into an ER vet immediately. Best of luck!

Your kitty likely is suffering from an upper respiratory infection and should be seen by a vet for an exam and deworming. It will likely need prescription antibiotics. In the meantime (until you can take her to a vet) you can tak a cloth with warm water an soak the eyes. This should help with opening them. You can then gently wipe off the purulent discharge.

Poor kittens! Eye infections can be viral or bacterial. Unfortunately you’re not likely to clear an eye infection with at home care. Just like with humans, these guys require antibiotic eyedrops which you will need to get from the veterinarian. I recommend to call your clinic and make an appointment ideally today. Eye infections in young kittens can become serious and cause permanent damage to the corneas. Bring the whole litter and the mother. Certainly cleaning off the teats and the rest of the environment will help but all the kittens have been exposed at this point. Poor Tiny! She has to be seen by a vet immediately. That's because any eye infection should be considered an emergency, as leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. It also sounds like she has a respiratory infection. I would have a vet on call or an ER vet see her right away. The vet can prescribe her medications for her symptoms to treat them. In conjunction with the medications from the vet, I can give you some things to try at home. Please know that these will not cure the eye infection, nor can they be used as a substitute for seeing the vet. It's extremely important Tiny is treated for her eye infection ASAP. At home, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.
