Kitten car travel: How to keep her cool, fed, and litter access?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 1 day old | 3 lbs

Im traveling with 10 week old, female kitten. Itll be about a 7 hour car ride in 80 degree outside weather. She has black fur. What are the best ways to keep her cool? Shes currently litter trained. But how often should i feed her, and give her water? Then, how often should i give her access to her litter box?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Shuri. I would try a couple of practice outings with her in the carrier before your big trip. It will help her get acclimated to the kennel. You can stop to offer her the litter box every two hours or so. She won't likely use it everytime, but it is nice to give her the opportunity to do so. Provide very small amounts of food at these breaks. Do not over feed her or she could become car sick. Offer water at this time too and possibly more frequently if she seems interested in drinking. Leave the air conditioning on in the car to keep her cool. You can try Feliway spray. It is a calming pheromone for cats. It is very helpful to some, while others do not like it. What a lovely kitty you have! Yes she can travel with you. You will need a carrier that can be closed securely. You should put the carrier into the car in such a way that your kitty cannot look out the window as she will not understand how the landscape can go by so fast and that will scare her. She may be crying a lot and that is somewhat unnerving. Some cats settle after a while and sleep, others will cry for 2 hours. She will likely pee in the carrier, so put a potty pad into the carrier that absorbs the pee. Make sure it is not too hot in the car, have water ready, but if it is only a two hour trip, she will likely not need water until she reaches her destination.

I would agree with Dr. Johnson. Catnip and Feliway spray can be helpful. You might also consider some training, by having her spend time in her carrier at home without actually going anywhere. What do I need to prepare for moving my cats long distance by car?

Congratulations on your move! Many times cats do quite well in the car. Depending on how long the trip is, it may be advisable to buy a large crate to put in the backseat so they can have a small portable litter box and a bed. This will also keep them from jumping around the car, keeping them (and you) safer. If your cats have a history of car sickness or nausea, I would reach out to your veterinarian to discuss a prescription (cerenia) that may help with it. Finally, some cats have a strong aversion to the car. If your cats have a history of stress or anxiety in ththe car, you could also reach out to your veterinarian to discuss a sedative, if needed. How to help my anxious cat eat & use litter box after travel?

I am so sorry but thank you for getting out and taking precious with you. One or two days without eating isn't too. If of a deal. Try offering canned and dry and possibly mix a bit of water or chicken broth or tuna juice in to get her to drink. Stick to mostly cat food with tuna or plain white chicken or broth as exceptions. What are the best tips for traveling with a cat on a 4-hour trip?

4 hours isn’t very long. For that trip I wouldn’t worry about travel food/water/litter box. I would recommend going on a shorter trip to see how Salem handles the car. If he seems to get car sick, discuss medications with your vet.
