Kitten has blood in poop. Is it from switching food too fast?

Blood in the stool can occur secondary to food sensitivity, but it can also be a sign of parasites or even occur secondary to stress, so I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out these medical problems. Unfortunately if you're switching foods frequently it can be difficult to determine which is or isn't helping, so if your vet recommends a food trial you should stick to one specific food for at least 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it is or isn't helping.

Diet change and heat stress can both cause small spots of blood due to boewl irritation and physical stress. I would consider feeding a probiotic such as fortiflora and monitor for any incresase in signs which would indicate a vet visit is required. Ensure a constant supply to fresh water and cool/shelter

This could definitely be because of the change of food but the black color concerns me that there may be digested blood present. Since she is so young and tiny, I would consider this urgent so I would try to get her into the vet soon. I would that she may become dehydrated or sicker if it isn't addressed. Your vet will likely want to run a fecal on her to check for any intestinal parasites. They may also want to know the food you are feeding her. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

It looks like Coco may have a small amount of rectal tissue prolapsed. This can occur if they have parasites, chronic diarrhea, foreign body or constipation. I recommend having her checked for intestinal parasites and possibly adding water to her food to help her pass stool more easily. If she is vomiting or showing any other signs of illness she should see a pet ASAP.

Other possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, stress. I would change her back to the original food and hopefully the blood goes away. If the blood persists for the next 2 days I would have her examine by your Vet before the holidays. Hello, and congratulations on Poppy! Young kittens can have things like worms that may cause diarrhea, but other factors, like a diet change or stress, could also be the culprit. Bright red blood streaks in the stool is not entirely uncommon when animals have diarrhea as they sometimes strain to push out remaining soft stool, which can burst small blood vessels in the rectum. The blood itself is probably nothing to worry about unless is continues, but Poppy should be evaluated by a vet for the diarrhea. They will check a stool sample for parasites, like worms, and give her the proper treatment. While it is unlikely that you or your family will contract parasites from Poppy, it is always best practice to wash well after playing with her and after cleaning her litterbox until she has been dewormed in order to minimize the risk of transmission. Most kittens do have worms, and need at least two deworming treatments. I recommend contacting your vet in the morning. Good luck, and I hope Poppy grows to be a happy, healthy cat!

Blood in the stool can be due to stress from the new kitten, or can be from intestinal parasites. I recommend checking a fecal for parasites, and monitoring the stool to see if the blood goes away as she adjusts to a new kitten in the household.
