My kitten ate a bottle nipple. Is it safe? How long for dewormer?

I certainly understand being worried about Keanu! If the piece she ate was small, then more than likely it will pass without problem. You can try to help her pass it along by giving her some chicken baby meat with no onion or garlic in it. It may give her a bit of diarrhea, but it should be fine. Keep an eye on her feces to make sure she passes it. It can take up to 72 hours for it to pass, and if you don't see it after this time, I would have her seen by a vet. If she stops eating, starts vomiting, has severe diarrhea, and/or becomes very lethargic, have her seen by a vet right away. At four weeks old, she is now old enough to be weaned onto kitten food, especially since she is chewing on the tip of latex nipples. To help her wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry kitten food only. I hope this helps!

Poor Luna! There are many different parasites that she could have been passing in her stool -- roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. She most likely acquired parasites from her mother either through the placenta or milk. Pyrantel pamoate is a common dewormer used to treat both roundworms and hookworms, but it is not typically started until 2 weeks of age. However, this medication is extremely safe and may be used off-label prior to 2 weeks of age. Ideally, I do recommend taking Luna to a vet to first determine the type of parasite present, and then determine the best treatment for her. It is important to note that not every dewormer treats every type of parasite. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Luna!

Great question! When kittens have worms, it typically takes two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. The first kills the adults already present, which the second kills the adults who had not yet hatched from the eggs at the time of the first deworming treatment. I would give you kittens another deworming treatment now, a second two weeks after the first, and then they should be dewormed every three months regularly. If deworming them again doesn't help with the scooting behavior, then I would take them back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps :-)

It is hard to say whether or not your kitten will be able to pass the nipple. It will mostly depend on how much he swallowed and how big the kitten is. If Sam starts vomiting, having diarrhea, or stops wanting to eat then I would begin to be concerned about a possible blockage. You can also add the formula to the canned food to entice him. If he’s at least 1 pound he is 4 weeks old. Don’t forget to get him to a vet soon to check his health and start vaccines. Many times you will not see intestinal parasites until the animals are critically sick. It's recommended to deworm young puppies and kittens every two weeks for at least three cycles, due to the lifecycle of the parasites. I would recommend getting a product labeled for kittens such as pyrantel pamoate. Make sure you weigh them and get accurate weights to dose the medication. As soon as you are able I do still recommend a veterinary exam as they will need vaccines, feline leukemia testing and there are other parasites that the pyrantel may not address. Look in your area as there are often low cost vaccination clinics available through pet stores or feed stores if a full service clinic is not possible. Also check with your local veterinarian as many times they may offer a rate for a litter of kittens versus charging each animal individually. I'm sorry but without seeing the worm i am not 100% sure what you are talking about. The most common worm, and the one you probably saw, is roundworms. A meningeal worm is highly uncommon and it would not come out the anus. Meningeal worms live in the brain. The kitten is not too young for dewormer; they can start being dewormed as early as two weeks of age with a drug called Strongid (pyrantel pamoate). I suggest you call another vet clinic or go to your local VETCO clinic to have the kitten dewormed. Deworming should be done every 3-4 weeks until the kitten is 4 months old.
