Is my 4-month-old kitten underweight at 1.3kg? What's normal?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Voldy is around 3lbs which is not completely out of the ordinary for a 4 month kitten. From the pictures alone, he appears well muscled and does not appear to be underweight (although a physical exam would be better at determining this). Kittens should weigh about 5 pounds at 6 months old, so I would continue feeding him a kitten food from Royal Canin and make sure he gets a kitten vitamin daily to encourage healthy growth. If you notice Voldy is not gaining any more weight or is eating less, you may want to have him seen by his veterinarian for exam just to make sure there are no underlying medical issues. I cannot tell you when his exact birthday is. All I can tell you is that most kittens we guess age by their weight. So, at 2 pounds they are about 2 months old. At 3 pounds, about 3 months old. So I would guess at about 2.6 pounds he should be about 11 weeks or so. He sounds normal.

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites which are common in kittens. At 4 weeks of age, Gatsby shoukdbweigh about 1 pound. You can offer a slurry made from KMR (kitten milk replacer) and a high quality kitten canned food. Offer food about 4-5 times a day. An exam with the vet would be recommended anyway to rule out injury or neurological conditions that may be affecting his gait.

She does seme a bit undeweight, if that is what you are asking. You should be feeding her 3 times a day, around 1/4-1/2 cup each feeding. Also have her stool checked for parasites. Intestinal worms can cause malnutrition in cats because they are taking all her nutrients that she ingests. There are general dewormers available at your local pet store, but getting her stool tested first is ideal. She is at the age where she needs to starts vaccinations anyway, so a vet visit for a general health check is the next best step towards her care. He is still very young and misses his mommy and his siblings. You should feed him canned kitten food, as kibble is still too hard and a kitten cannot eat enough of it. Feed him small portions 4-5 times a day and feed as much as he wants to eat, ie refill the bowl a little bit at a time. Make sure water is available but not next to the food. It needs to be about 6 feet away from the food bowl. At this age (71 days) he should weigh a little over 1kg, or 2.3lbs

Vomiting once a day is not normal and I recommend to have her examined. Kittens should weigh about 1 pound per age in months until 6 months of age. So she's a little small. Make sure to have her checked for worms and parasites since these could make her vomit and make her smaller than normal. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is ok to feed multiple small meals, however at this age he will likely need more food. You can let him eat as much as he likes at this age as he is still growing. at three months he should weigh around 1200g.
