I just dewormed my new kitten. How long to keep her from my other cat?

You should wait 7-10 days before introducing the cats to each other. That way you can monitor them for any upper respiratory signs. I would be most worried about that. After the 7-10 days, if there are no URI signs you can introduce the cats to each other. Use proper technique - see link to an article below - to avoid behavioral problems. While there are different types of deworming medications available over the counter you would need to know what type of intestinal parasites your kitten has to choose the appropriate one, and that would most likely require a fecal analysis with your veterinarian. If your kitten is eating and drinking normally and seems active I would wait until your appointment. Your kitten has probably had the worms since birth! Most intestinal parasites are transmitted through stool so you should isolate the new kitten from the adult cat and give them separate litter pans.

I'm glad you are doing your homework before bringing new fur babies into the situation. Most shelters will routinely deworm their pets and test for leukemia and FIV. So you definitely want to make sure these treatments/tests are run prior to adopting the new kittens. Its not unusual for new cats and kittens to break with upper respiratory infections within the first 2 weeks of being adopted. Herpes virus is very common in cats (some estimate 80% of cats carry the virus) and it comes out in the stress related to being in a shelter and being rehomed. Now, this is not going to happen to every cat/kitten but its not unusual. Therefore, your best chance to avoid this would be to get a cat/kitten that has been kept in a foster home. It will likely still have herpes but the environment should be less stressful, therefore less risk of the virus becoming active. Keep the new pet separated for 2 weeks. That way if it does have an outbreak, you will at least have it contained. You could also put your cats on 500mg of lysine twice daily to help booster their immune system. Good job that you are not letting them to be together. Once you de-worm her and put on a flea/tick product, she should be OK to meet your other cats. Also, if Felix is going to be an outdoor cat you should get her vaccinated. Ask your vet to examine the eye - some kittens will scratch themselves and cause small skin wounds, that may be the case. She looks healthy and very happy on the photos you posted :)

It would be prudent to keep him separated from your cat until he is examined by your veterinarian. The kitten should be dewormed, given flea medication if necessary and vaccinated before he is introduced to your cat. A blood test for FeLV and FIV is also recommended.

Coccidia can be treated fairly easy. I would suggest you keep your cat separated from the kitten until the kitten's stool is free of coccidia. If you adopt the kitten while under treatment for coccidia, keep your cat and the kitten separate and give them their own litter box. Congratulations on your new pet! Physical distance is not as important as actual contact. If your new kitten is in a cage or crate, this still likely allows for the cats to touch each other through the bars. Certain viruses can be transmitted in nasal discharge, saliva, and cats can scratch each other even through small openings.
