Why do my horses have sudden goopy, smelly poop that looks like cow patties?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My two horses (Jack and Magic) today have had very goopy poop. They look like cow patties and pick up like cow patties and stink like crazy. Almost gagging. This happens everyonce and a while but it’s usually only with one horse.... the picture with the 3(ish) piles is Magic and the single is Jack

A change in fecal consistency is not unusual when the seasons change. Weather can affect water & sugar content in all forages. As long as they are eating & drinking & acting normal, I would not be overly concerned. If you have not dewormed, this is a good time to do so using Equimax Gold, or Quest. If either horse continues with the soft stool, & especially if you notice any weight loss, please contact your veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
