My guinea pig's stuffy nose returned after Baytril. What can I do?

I would definitely recommend switching to a different antibiotic, after baytril fails i usually try TMS and then Zhitromax, both of them for 2-3 weeks. if this doesn't work either the last resort is Penicillin injections for 1-2 weeks.

Hello. I assume your previous veterinary visits resulted in x-rays, antibiotics, & a good assessment of diet & environmental conditions. If a dust free environment was not suggested, then change to something like Yesterdays News. If not, that is where I would start. Many young GPs can get a respiratory infection called Bordetella. Treatment involves using the antibiotics enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg once daily), & doxycycline ( 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours ). Nebulization using saline & enrofloxacin may be very useful. Your veterinarian can recommend a protocol, but I like to do this 3 times daily for 10 minutes. Treatment with antibiotics & nebulization may need to be continued for as long as 21 days. Thanks for reaching out about Biscuit. If seems not to be responding to antibiotics, a culture and other diagnostics needs to be performed to get a more complete diagnosis. Separate the administration of both medications for 30 minutes or so. Wipe nose as needed to remove any accumulations of discharge. Nebulization is another mechanism to administer drugs to the upper and lower respiratory system. Talk to your vet again. Good luck.

So good of you to take on this little bunny! Pasteurella is very common in rabbits and most have it in their lungs, often a stressful event such as moving can lead to it causing an infection. It can be quite serious especially in a young or old rabbit. However, you are doing the right thing in having it treated. Antibiotics are limited in rabbits and baytril is a good choice for this type of issue. I cant comment on the dose as I di not know the weight of your rabbit or the concentartion, however, I imagine it is sufficient. It can take antibiotics a fair few days to start making an impact so it may just be a matter of time. I would suggest asking your et for an antinflammatory such as meloxicam also to help tge lungs. If the rabbut seems to be detetiorating do go back to the vet as he may require alternative treatment.

Considering that these signs could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract infection, yes you can use it, but if the signs persist despite a week course of this antibiotic a veterinary check up is absolutely needed. Dosage you can use would be 5mg/kg orally every 12 hours. I am sorry to hear about your guinea pig! You are correct in that we don't normally prescribe Penicillin products in guinea pigs as they can kill the normal healthy bacteria in the GI tract leading to severe GI problems. I would recommend contacting your vet to see if they have other antibiotics available. In the US we most often use a drug called Baytril (enrofloxacin) or Tribrissen (trimethoprim sulfadiazine). Perhaps your vet does have other drug options available.
