What to do if I found a very sick and injured kitten outside?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1.5 lbs

Hi, I recently found a kitten outside of my home. She was very weak because of a storm & could barely stand due to not eating. She can't purr properly or breathe. I tried washing her, but she has this coat of what looks like gold-ish goop. And she has a bone sticking out in the middle of her stomach. I'm afraid the kitten has a collapsed lung or deformity... If you could help me with the questions I needed, that'd be awesome. And if there's anything I could do to fix this problem.

Poor little thing! Thank you for trying to help her. It sounds like Candy Cane has many issues going on. I strongly suggest you take her to see a veterinarian as many of the issues you describe sound life threatening. I would take her to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. You can try offering her canned food, keeping her warm or even offering some KMR kitten formula but her condition sounds critical. Unfortunately there is not much more you can do at home without seeing a veterinarian first.
