My cat ran away after a dog chase. How to find and prevent escapes?

I'm sorry to hear your cat ran away! It would be best to place out a carrier or humane trap with food in it to see if you can try to catch him, or leave out a dish of food nearby for him to return to. Cats are enticed by smell, so making it smelly or using something such as heated chicken may help, however you also run the risk of attracting wild animals as well. Letting any local animal shelters or neighbors know to keep an eye out for your cat may also help alert you to where he is so you can catch him. As for in the house, making sure each cat has their own space to rest and relax when you can't watch them, and that they can all get to food, water, litter, etc without being bothered by another cat can help reduce fighting. A pheromone diffuser such as Comfort Zone can also help with intercat aggression. If the aggression is continuing or worsening, a vet exam to rule out pain or illness which can cause behavioral changes is best as well.

I am so sorry that your friend's kitten ran away! Unfortunately, it is possible that the cat may not return, but I recommend making posts on social media letting people know you are looking for the cat. You can also contact local vet clinics to see if anyone has found him, and to let them know you are looking for the cat. You can put up fliers if they let you in the clinic. Finally, you can contact the local SPCA to see if anyone has dropped off the kitten. I hope your friend finds their kitten!

It is not unusual for a cat to come back home and they are good tracing back their way home. If he has a microchip you can check if he has been found at any of the local shelters. I am so sorry Tux ran away! I have heard stories of owners who have been reunited with their missing pets months and even years after the pet has gone missing, so it's certainly possible that you can find him. Given that he's not neutered, I wouldn't be surprised if he's travelled far looking for females with which to mate. Intact males will roam far and wide to find females, so I would widen your search area for him. I will be hoping you will find it!

If she won't let you catch her you can set up a humane trap (most animal shelters have ones you can rent) or a carrier and place some warmed up wet food or even some warm fried chicken in it. The smell is usually enough to entice the cat to enter the carrier/cage so that you can safely trap them. If she has been roaming around a new location, a checkup with your vet to make sure she is not injured or ill from the experience is also smart.

I would suggest sticking with a harness you are sure that your cat annoy scape from. Also, since you are taking him for walks regularly I would recommend making sure you have your cat microchipped so that if he does get away from you he will have a better chance of being returned. It's possible he is being skittish, just enjoys being outdoors, or has been injured and so won't approach you. It may be a good idea to contact your local animal shelter for a humane trap (one that doesn't hurt them when they enter it). You can then place it in his usual hangout spot with some smelly food (heated chicken or canned food) to entice him to enter. Once he's safely captured, bringing him to your vet to make sure he's OK after being out so long is best, and from there you can get him settled back in indoors.
