Is euthanasia best for a feral kitten with difficult Calicivirus?

Goodness, I am so sorry for your loss. Based on this bloodwork and on what you’re telling me, I think that euthanasia was a very reasonable and humane decision. Not only were the red cells low, but the white blood cells and platelets as well, and there isn’t any evidence of the body trying to “regenerate” these cells on the bloodwork you’ve attached. A transfusion may have given a temporary “Bandaid” to the situation, but I’m afraid that a cure was likely impossible. I know how difficult these decisions are. Please rest assured that you did the best thing for your kitty. I’m afraid continuing to treat would likely have only prolonged your cat’s suffering. You have my sincere sympathy for your loss. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for FIP and if your cat is suffering then euthanasia is the best option. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this and make this decision. I wish there was more we could recommend for you but I think you're a vet has your cats best interest at heart.

It is true that if she has the virus, the vaccination is not likely to help much, but it is still recommended to vaccinate her as the vaccination will protect her from other diseases. There is unfortunately no known effective treatment for calicivirus, when it flares up it is recommended that the vet pute Fluffy on antibiotics and anti inflammatories.

It is possible for calici to cause lameness in kittens but it is not a very common symptom. Usually they are showing respiratory signs, very lethargic and not eating. Has Burrikh been vaccinated against calici? That is a core vaccine for cats. She should have received a vaccine at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. If she is fully vaccinated I find it hard to believe that she would catch calici. Cats typically acquire feline calcivirus (FCV) after coming into contact with other infected cats, such as in a shelter, cattery, or boarding facility. Has she been exposed to any of these situations? If not, again, I find it unlikely that she would acquire this disease. I suggest you take Burrikh to your vet for some testing although I am not sure what testing you have available in Indonesia for this virus. The most reliable diagnostic test involves identifying a buildup of FCV antibodies. These antibody tests can be used to detect and measure the levels of feline calcivirus antigen and/or antibodies corresponding to the viral antigen (feline calcivirus). A more advanced test that may be used involves growing the isolated viruses under controlled conditions using a technique called cell culture. If she does have calici you cannot treat this at home. If she just has an injury then it will likely resolve on it's own over time. Cats often get injured and we don't know how they did it so it is possible that it is an injury. If you are worried about her then you need to take her to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach. It sounds as though Nova may have been dealing with some infection or systemic disease. It is difficult to say for sure but if it was progressed too far, there probably was not much you could have done. If caught early on, then maybe something could have been done. Viral infections such as feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus can cause chronic infections and can lead to death in some cats. She could have any one of these infectious diseases and there is no treatment for either disease. I am sorry for your loss but try not to blame yourself. Hi, I think she should be able to have some antibiotics to prevent secondary infections if you notice that there is some discharge that could indicate this. She could have some fluids and also some food to encourage her to eat if she is not doing so ( Hill’s recovery). Hope this helps,
