My 5-month-old kitten died after symptoms. Could I have saved her?

It's really difficult to know the cause of her early demise without having seen her. I will say that it's not uncommon for kittens to be born with a problem that causes them to be unhealthy and prone to an early death. Often times, there's really not much you can do about it. If her appetite was declining, then there must have been some disease that was making her feel really bad. I would not worry about the flies and roaches, because they have little chance of causing a disease severe enough to kill her. It is not always obvious how to care for a cat, but I'm sure you at-least gave her a comfortable place to stay and plenty of food; so I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Sorry to hear this! Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon situation with small kittens. They usually die suddenly like this due to a heritable defect, poor immunity, or a severe disease like panleukopenia. There are very few diseases that a kitten can pass onto people and considering that she died so quickly, I would not be concerned about any diseases that could be passed to people. Most of the diseases carried by cats that can be passed to people are not a problem for healthy people and would not be nearly as deadly. If you did get a disease like toxoplasmosis or bartenolosis there would be warning signs such as feeling malaise, or Flu-like. Again, it's extremely unlikely for this to happen to you, but if you did feel sick in the next two weeks, then it would be good to mention the kitten to your doctor. Either way, the diseases that you could get from cats can be treated and would not be deadly (besides rabies, which is extremely unlikely in this case). I really wouldn't worry though. I've seen many of these little kittens die suddenly in shelters and have never had a concern about a zoonotic disease (disease passed from animals to people). I hope that helps.

It is really quite hard to say whether or not it was too late on this one. Cats are very stoic creatures and sometimes it is not easy to pick up on signs of illness or these signs may not be easily noticed. If it was FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), cats with this disease can become sick very quickly and typically will not make it past a week after diagnosis. The presence of a tumor can have vague signs but can end rapidly depending on what time of tumor so it can be hard to say for sure. It sounds like you did everything you could for him at the time. Sometimes things do worsen and progress rapidly despite all efforts. You certainly did the right thing to bring him into a veterinarian. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

It's very hard to try to give you the right answer without a necropsy (autopsy of animals) and some tests. Some guesses would include sepsis (blood poisoning), viral infection with a very potent upper respiratory virus, fading kitten syndrome, among other things. Again, I'm so sorry that you lost him. There are three very common diseases that cats get that can cause his symptoms: diabetes, kidney failure and hyperthyroidism. If left untreated, all can cause death. I doubt a virus has much to do with it but of course it is possible. As for the vitamins, if they were made for cats that is not likely the cause. If it was not cat vitamins then it is possible he was overdosed. Not all vitamins are safe in large doses. I am sorry this happened and that he passed. In the future please get your cat examined by a veterinarian before the disease has progressed to this point. When they start losing weight that should be a good indicator that something is wrong especially if they are not eating and lethargic as well. Best wishes.

Hello. FIV is a very serious disease that is often fatal. We sometimes will aspirate the effusions , but for the most part it is a very uncomfortable process that is very temporary at best. The effusions come back very quickly. You did nothing wrong. You cared for your friend until the very end, but the virus was just too overwhelming for his system.
