My feral cat has a burst abscess. Can I use Benadryl to sedate her?

An undrained abscess should be drained and flushed as well. That should be done by a vet, as it will be painful for B, and he likely will need to be sedated in order to do it. In addition, it needs to be done sterilely to prevent additional infection from entering the abscess. I would have B seen by a vet now to have the abscess treated, and the vet can prescribe antibiotics for him as well.

Tea tree oil is toxic to cats, so please stop putting it on Fresca. He will ingest it by licking it off, and that can have serious consequences for his health. In addition, that and aloe will not cure the abscess. Peroxide also interrupts the healing process and can cause damage to the tissues. Please do not give him Amox-Clav either, it's never recommend to self treat your animal with medications as you may accidentally do harm to him. In addition, it may be wrong antibiotic. Fresca needs to see a vet as soon as possible. The vet can drain and flush him abscesses, clean them, and can give him an approbate antibiotic to treat it.

Unfortunately, an abscess cannot be treated at home, Shivers has to see a vet for it. If it's ruptured, it needs to be flushed sterilely to prevent further infection from entering the area, and she needs antibiotics to treat the infection which are available by prescription only from the vet. She does have to see a vet as soon as possible for this, and it truly cannot wait until next week. I would see if a family member can take her to the vet this week since you are only home this week from school.

Without examining her it's impossible to know for sure, however it resembles and has acted like an abscess. Ideally she would be seen by a vet, they would flush it out with warm (not hot) salt water (1 teaspoon in 1 cup of water- your vet would use sterile saline) and then likely get antibiotics and pain meds. An E-collar also prevents Littlecloud from licking and introducing more bacteria into the wound. If you cannot go to a vet, I recommend flushing it/cleaning it with salt water. Do not use any topical creams, just leave it open to drain. Clean it twice a day with the salt water, and try to prevent Littlecloud from licking at it or chewing at it. The main pain has now gone since the abscess has burst (the pressure is relieved) . Do not give any human pain medications as these are often very toxic to cats. Best of luck with Littlecloud!

You can throw a blanket or large towel over her and grab her that way, wrap her and then cut off the collar with scissors. Best get someone to help you. Your vet can also give you some acepromacine tablets you will need to crush and put in her food, preferably inside, so she cannot run off and hide and fall asleep somewhere else or get attacked by a dog while sedated. There are cat traps that you may be able to borrow from your local animal welfare organisation.

Benadryl doesn’t usually make dogs very sleepy, but you could try it. I would do your best to keep the paw covered or have her wear the cone while you give her lots of reassurance. It can take a few days for them to adapt to the change in sight and hearing while wearing the cone, but after that they should go on like normal. I would also talk to your vet about other sedative options to be used as needed.

However, if the abscess has burst and is discharging, it is a relief. As the puss comes out, the pressure goes down and abscess becomes less painful. You need to make sure that he is not trying to scratch the face as that could be painful. Your vet will be able to give him injections of antibiotics and pain relief.
