What should I feed my underweight rescued cat to help him gain weight?

Your cat needs to be fed a complete commercial cat food. He will not gain any weight from cat milk. He may also need to be wormed. I recommend you take him to a veterinarian for a wellness exam to make sure he is not ill. Offer him some canned cat food. I guarantee he will love it.

There are four brands of food I recommend: Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I would feed Leo one of those brands, and make sure it's a kitten food. Measure out the daily recommend amount of food listed on the bag, and leave it out during the day for Leo to graze on throughout the day. This is how I feed my cats.

I would recommend that you have Lily examined by a vet to see if there is a medical cause for her being underweight. Sometimes there can be low levels of protein being lost to the intestines or through the kidneys that will cause inability to gain weight. It may or may not be seen with other symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea, or urinary symptoms. Baseline blood work and urinalysis is important, and if the protein is low then additional testing may be indicated.

After neutering, generally at the age of 6 months, in Leo's case 8 months, cats are still growing not yet reached their full size till around 12 months of age. For now I would recommend to stick to a good quality kitten food till a year old. But, many young cats gain weight beyond what they should gain after neutering so watch him if he is gaining more weight then he should then talk to your vet about adult cat food, some are specific to castrated/spayed young cats.

I'm so glad we were able to help you with Goldie. Whiskas is ok, but I prefer Royal Canin. I'd feed her Royal Canin kitten food. She doesn't need the chikan, tuna, or rice. Make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments, as that can lead her to not gain weight. Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine.
