Can I drain my senior cat's eyelid cyst at home if it doesn't bother her?

If you are sure they are benign sebaceous cysts, you can monitor them for rapid change or growth. Keep the area clean and dry. If they become infected, ulcerated, cause pain or restrict movement, then you can discuss surgical resection with your veterinarian.

Cysts can be painful, and I would take Cry Baby into the vet first thing in the morning to have the cyst drained sterilely. It may need to be removed to prevent it from growing again, but it should definitely be drained to prevent it from rupturing. Please do not dry to open it yourself, as that can introduce infection into the area.

Hi. I understand your reluctance to anesthetize an older pet but there are many options that can make it a safe procedure. I would have her evaluated but a veterinarian to discuss options. If this is truly a cyst sometimes they can be sterilely drained. It will recur but may reduce the size for a while. Otherwise doing preanesthetic bloodwork can assess if she would be a good candidate for anesthesia and you and your vet can work out the best plan for Ghosty's treatment together.

Poor Maggie! It definitely looks like her eye is affected somehow - it's hard to say exactly what's going on without being able to shine an ophthalmoscope into the eye and examine it more closely, but something is definitely wrong. If the cyst is draining through her eye socket, I would be concerned that there may be some damage to the eye itself - so yes, an ER visit tonight would be best if this is possible. The problems with cysts is that they open reoccur, and typically need to be removed surgically. In addition, removing the fluid from a cyst should be done in a sterile manner, and I would be concerned that you may accidentally be introducing infection into the cyst yourself by pressing on it. I would take Akkiko into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can drain any remaining fluid with a sterile needle and syringe, and can discuss removing it with you. There is also the chance it could be a malignant adenocarcinoma, so it is a good idea to have the vet biopsy it just to make sure it is benign.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. In the photos you provided this appears to be what looks like a cyst to me. Many times these cysts are the nine and occur with age. If you do not want to put him through any major testing you could still have him examined by a veterinarian and the vet you have a look at him can stick a small needle into the cyst and drain the contents. This does not generally require any sedation and is typically well- tolerated by cats. Most likely the cyst will fill back up, but I have several patients that are older where the owners do not want to put them through any major testing or surgery and elect to bring the animal in every so often to have the cyst drained. The cyst was actually an abscess or pocket of puss from a cat scratch or bite. I'm glad it is draining as it will heal quickly now that the infection is coming out. I would massage all of the infected material out of the wound then clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Keep it clean and treated daily and this should heal in a few days to a week. Since it's draining a veterinary visit shouldn't be needed unless it fills again and Salem stops eating due to a fever.
