My dog has food allergies, itching, and vomiting. What food helps?

It is possible that Jetsen has an allergy to his food, but if you are going to switch to a grain free food, I recommend using Orijen or Acana instead of Blue Buffalo (BB). I personally do not like BB. Not only are there reports that it causes terrible gas in dogs, the quality control of their food is poor. They don't own their own factories, they pay a factory to make their food. As a consequence, the company has had to publicly admit that their food has not been made to the standards they claim. Orijen and Acana both own their own factories and have excellent quality control over their food. I would use either of those brands instead.

I have had a lot of problems with my patients eating blue buffalo. I would off Howie plain boneless skin chicken breast white and rice for about 3 days then slow transition him from the chicken and rice to a new diet. I would look into natural balance, science diet, royal canin or iams. These are all great foods that are less likely to upset him stomach. If they have a sensitive stomach formula, try that. I would also keep him on his probiotic non-stop. Finally, before finished the giardia meds, I would have your vet recheck his poop sample to ensure it is completely gone. If he continues to vomit or if he starts having diarrhea again, I would have your vet take another look him. I hope this helps!

It does sound like from your description that Crayon (love her name!) may be allergic to something in the food causing her skin reaction. I'm wondering if you are talking about Blue Buffalo dog food. I personally do not like that food, it's not that good quality, and they have problems with quality control because they don't own the factories that make their food. I recommend trying Orijen or Acana. They are much better quality than Blue Buffalo, and they own their own factories to make their food so the quality control is much better.

I'd have him seen by a vet for this issue. The cause of his skin problem needs to be diagnosed so it can be treated correctly. Frankly, I'm not a fan of Blue Buffalo since they have been cited for lying about the ingredients in their foods more than once. My personal favorite brands of dog food are Science Diet and Royal Canin. Both are excellent quality, made in their own facilities so there's less chance of contamination with other foods and all are extensively tested for effectiveness and palatability. If he hasn't been to the vet in a while, I recommend getting him checked to make sure there isn't some underlying medical condition causing his upset stomach.

I recommend to ask your veterinarian this question. A true food allergy generally requires a special diet (this is generally a prescription food and I always recommend one with a hydrolyzed protein). Dietary intolerance may just need a diet that is formulated for sensitive stomachs. I recommend the Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan. Your vet will be able to guide you as to which type of food to try. Poor Pepper! If she has a food allergy/intolerance issue, then she needs to be on a strict veterinary prescription food allergy diet like Hills Z/D or Royal Canin Anallergenic. These diets are called "hydrolyzed protein" diets because they have gone through a special cooking process that breaks down potential allergens in the diet so Pepper's immune system doesn't recognize them as a problem. She needs to eat one of these diets exclusively for 8-10 weeks to see if there is a benefit. Hope that helps!
