My diabetic senior cat is shaking his head. Is it a seizure?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. You should take Cheshire to your local vets for full clinical examination and a blood test to check his blood sugar level, red cell count, kidney and liver function. If the blood results come back normal and he keeps having the episodes, he may need further investigation, like MRI scan of the brain. Alternatively, your vet may recommend treatment with anti-epileptic medication asa trial.

This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I recommend having Sami seen by her vet who can perform bloodwork and x-rays and prescribe anticonvulsant medications if the seizures continue. I recommend bringing a video of the episode if you are able to, as his will be really helpful in determining if the episode was truly a seizure. Hello. It could be, so this is the reason we need to monitor glucose levels so closely when insulin is first started. You do not indicate how old Mancat is, but at 17 pounds, he could also have some pain from arthritis in the leg. We now know that after 10 years of age, up to 90% of our pets ( including cats ), will have arthritis in 1 or more joints. Make sure his glucose levels are OK & you might want to at least put Mancat on a good joint supplement. Your vet can tell you what might be best for your pet. It is important to see exactly what is going on, to determine that he is having a true seizure, as opposed to a collapse or localized tremors for a different reason. A video would be very helpful and I would be happy to provide a consultation. If this is a true seizure, they are usually the result of abnormal brain activity. This can be due to a large number of diseases including brain cancer, infection, or epilepsy (the cause of which is not currently known in cats). With brain cancer or epilepsy, blood work can be normal, however, x-rays or a CT scan would determine if there is something else causing the seizures. It may be helpful to know that seizures themselves are not thought to be painful, and it is normal for animals to urinate/defecate while they are having a seizure. This frequency of seizures is definitely confusing and distressful for Clunker, and a veterinarian can prescribe an anti-seizure medication to keep him comfortable. It is important to have Clunker evaluated by a vet to ensure that there is nothing else that can be causing collapse or tremors, such as a hormonal issue or viral infection, and to have him treated appropriately.

Hi, Sorry to hear about Jack, the episodes you describing with hypersalivation (increased salivation), shaking and urinating on himself which are happening more during the night can be seizures. I would strongly recommend to have him checked by a vet sooner than later as a frequency of few episodes in a few weeks is high and needs to be managed asap. It is always very helpful in diagnosis to have a video of the episode to show the vet so if you can do that in case another episode occurs before the vet appointment. Hope he will feel better soon.

I would recommend bringing Lily to a veterinarian. Lily can also have something like a bad tooth or an infection in her mouth. With her shaking her head it can also be an ear infection. With the symptoms you are describing they do not sound as severe as they typically would be with FOPS. Your veterinarian can evaluate her and see if they feel like there is something else wrong of the feline orofacial pain syndrome.
