Is coconut oil safe and effective for cleaning my cat's teeth?

I wouldn’t recommend using this combination to brush your dog’s teeth. While the coconut oil probably tastes good, it will just add unwanted calories to your dog’s diet, even if you are using a small amount. And the baking soda will be too harsh and abrasive for your dog. Instead I would recommend a toothpaste specifically made for dog’s. Or, you don’t even have to use toothpaste at all! The most important part of brushing a dog’s teeth is the mechanical action of brushing away the plaque that builds up on the teeth! I would not recommend coconut oil. This will close the pores of the skin and cause a skin infection. I recommend an over the counter aloe and oatmeal shame. This is going to cause a nice shinny coat. I do understand your diet preference but cats do eat protein in the wild and is needed for there proper growth. However if you have Holly on a proper diet she does not need any type of supplements the normal food is enough. For any type of bug- maybe fleas - I would recommend a topical flea prevention every 30 days. Typically the baths only wash off the fleas but does not prevent them from coming back.

Excessive amounts of any fat (such as coconut oil) can cause diarrhea, but coconut oil is not a problem for cats otherwise. Hello! Coconut oil may prevent the Frontline from being effective as the active ingredient uses the natural oils and pores in the skin to spread and work properly, and the coconut oil may prevent that from happening. There is no credible research that suggests that coconut oil works as a flea preventative or treatment, however Frontline is a well-tested and safe product for cats. If you would like to continue using Frontline, I suggest giving Clint a bath with a mild soap and water solution (to remove the coconut oil), waiting 24-48 hours for the fur to dry and from natural skin oils to be replaced, then applying the Frontline. Even if Clint had some Frontline applied already, the extra amount should not harm him as it is extremely safe and is not systemic (is not effective through the bloodstream). As you can see on the product, this does have the seal of the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council), but when I look closer at the recommendations they have, this product seems to be better for dogs, than cats. It is absolutely safe for cats, but if you want to use one truly recommended by the VOHC for cats, then look for Healthymouth Toothpast/Brush Kit Combination for cats. This is the only toothpaste type product they recommend specifically for cats & this was of February, 2022. Coconut oil is safe, but I can't tell you for sure or not if it will work! If Kyra will allow it, the best thing to prevent hairballs would to brush her frequently to remove the extra hair so that she doesn't swallow it when grooming. No, coconut oil will not help with your dogs' breath. Coconut oil has no proven medical benefits in dogs and can cause pancreatitis in some dogs. Instead, I recommend brushing their teeth with a small kid-sized toothbrush, using first water to brush the outer surfaces of their teeth, followed by a smear of dog toothpaste. Brushing daily is the most effective way to prevent dental disease and improve breath. If Enzo and his buddy's teeth have a significant amount of tartar accumulation causing the breath issues, they may need to have dental cleanings performed by their vet to first get the tartar under control. Dental bones can absolutely help further tartar accumulation, but brushing is the most effective method of dental home care.
