Why does my cat get woozy and dizzy after coughing up a hairball?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat sometimes gets very woozy directly after coughing up a large hairball. His pupils go very big and he will lay down on his side and seem very out of it. It only lasts for a couple seconds, and then he's up running around again. Otherwise he is energetic and has no known health issues. What could be happening with him?

It is not uncommon for cats to have a period of dizziness/light-headed after strenuous coughing or vomiting similar to ourselves. Regular weekly treatment with an over the counter hair ball paste may help to lessen the hairballs and make this less common. If it persists or there are any other signs of weakness, reduced exercise levels or increased respiratory rate you should consider a full physical exam to rule out any heart or lung disease
