My cats are coughing and heaving, but no hairballs. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My cat started "coughing" a little over 24 hours ago. He was heaving like he had to expel a hairball, but nothing comes out. He shakes and strains when he does this. He can breathe just fine, and is eating and drinking and running and playing and is as affectionate as usual, but he stops and does the cough heave thing a lot over the past day. Now, another of my cats is heaving the same way. I have no clue what it could be. I'm terrified they are sick. Please help with information.

I'm sorry to hear both kitties are coughing. It is possible there could be something in the home such as dust or allergens causing the behavior, or both kitties got into something that is causing some irritation. Moving them to a well-ventilated area may help if there is some sort of irritation ongoing. If the coughing continues, or other symptoms appear, it is a good idea to bring them to your vet for an exam and to rule out any health issues.
