Seeing white worm-like things on my cat's butt. What should I do?

The worms in the photo appear to be tapeworms or, less commonly, pinworms. these can cause impactions and diarrhea, especially in kittens. Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. You should also be careful when cleaning out her litter box to make sure you wash your hands well with soap and water, as some of these parasites can infect humans. I hope all is well!

Hello. These are definitely tape worm segments. When you deworm your cat again, make sure it says it takes care of tapeworms. Also, be sure you are using a good flea preventative regularly, as this is the most common way that cats pick up tapeworms. The other way is through hunting & eating small prey. It could be Pants has intestinal worms such as tapeworms. You will need to take him into the vet to get this diagnosed and to get medication, as tapeworms require praziquantel to treat, which is prescription only from the vet. Best of luck.

This looks a lot like a tapeworm proglottid. The tapeworms that infect dogs and cats do not cause infections in people, so you do not need to be concerned about cleaning the house. Most tapeworms are spread through fleas so you should check for fleas and start a flea preventative to prevent reinfection. While I think confirming the diagnosis with a veterinarian is best, and you could ask your local animal shelter about low cost options in your area, tapeworm dewormers are available over the counter. The medication used is called praziquantel. If Zoey has any medical conditions I would check with your veterinarian before giving any OTC medication.

Your kitty has a tapeworm infection. This is not contagious to people. Cats get tapeworm by ingesting an infected flea while grooming. Tapeworm use fleas as interim hosts and this is how they can infect cats and dogs. So you should do two things now: 1) get a cat wormer that contains praziquantel which kills tapeworm. Your vet should be able to sell you the wormer, but you can also buy it in a pet shop or over the internet. 2) Make sure you do flea prevention , either via spot on or a seresto collar or a flea spray. This should take care of the problem.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! If you are finding white rice sized segments around Katniss's tail then I suspect you are seeing tape worm segments. Cats get tape worm from fleas and from hunting. You can always post a picture to confirm. I would deworm her with a product that gets tapeworm. They are typically spread to the cat from fleas or by eating rodents. It is rare, but they can occassionally be spread to people. It is best for Shiva to see a veterinarian.
