My cat has a white ear growth. Is it a skin tag? Should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

My cat has recently grown a smallish but noticeable ( watermelon seed size) white growth at the base of his ear, towards the middle, not the opening. Looks and feels like a human skin tag. Doesn't appear to cause him pain when inspected, but does eventually pull away. Seems otherwise healthy, he is still active and eating well. Should I take him to a vet? Thank you, Caren

This definitely could be a skin tag and nothing to worry about, but since it is new, I would have your vet take a look at it once to ensure it doesn’t need to be removed. There are other types of skin masses that can look similar to skin tags but are actually cancerous so it is always better to just have someone confirm. I hope this helps!
