My cat is weak and sick after a Seresto collar. Is it safe?

These flea collars are extremely toxic and one should not use them anymore. Tetrachlorvinphos toxic to the nervous system and likely to cause cancer. The collar could indeed have caused these signs in your kitty. There are quite a few flea and tick medications on the market, such as spot-ons that are not detrimental to the health of your cat. Hi there. No, this shouldn't be a problem. The Seresto collar is designed to slowly release medication over the entire 8-week period, and should not cause toxicity issues if it is accidentally licked.

Yes it would be ideal to remove the collar and use another type of flea treatment, waiting at least a couple of weeks (you can use comfortis tablets). It is very likely that both the scab and the hair loss is due to the collar which is causing skin reaction/allergy.

I think it's kind of unlikely that his signs are related to the flea collar. If he had fleas - which I'm assuming he did, and that's why you got the collar - he could have a serious infection called mycoplasmosis, which produces anemia and weakness. If that's not the problem, he could have any number of problems, as the signs are pretty vague, but clearly not normal. Please get him checked out ASAP, as he sounds quite ill.

Since you suspect that the Seresto collar may have been causing his issues, you did the right thing by taking the collar off and bathing him. However, his lethargy, eye discharge, and loss of appetite could also be due to a virus (gastrointestinal or causing an upper respiratory infection), kidney disease, or many other health conditions. I'm glad to hear that he's going to the vet tomorrow because his vet will be able to examine him and perform any necessary diagnostic testing. In the meantime, continue offering small frequent amounts of Pedialyte or water, as well as trying to tempt Joey to eat with either meat baby foods, boiled chicken breast, or canned cat foods. Warming up any of these foods for a few seconds can make their aroma more noticeable, which can be enticing to some cats. I hope this helps and that Joey feels better soon!

A 19 year old cat may have an underlying kidney or liver problem (actually this is very likely) that is making her more sensitive to these medications. If she has not been to the vet recently she should be examined and have some blood testing run. If you continue to try things and her organs are not functioning properly you may really put her over the edge. Luckily she recovered after the Seresto Collar incident. I suggest you: 1. Treat the environment (ie: the house) as the fleas will be constantly hatching and continuing the problem. I strongly recommend Knockout Spray ES. ALL animals in the house much be on some type of flea prevention as well or the fleas will continue to thrive. 3. To treat her specifically, without using the traditional flea medications, you can use this waterless mousse - it is only a temporary fix though. I am sorry to hear that Max is going through this. I don’t know how long ago he ingested the collar but I am concerned. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. X-rays may be recommended to look for an obstruction as well as blood work to evaluate For possible toxicity .
