My 19-year-old cat has weak bladder, grey stools, distended anus. Why?

I would recommend that you have Princess seen by your veterinarian. A rectal prolapse may need surgical correction and will get worse with time, if left untreated. Diarrhea can exacerbate a prolapse. An infection with a parasite called coccidia can cause diarrhea and causes enough irritation in some pets to cause a prolapse. Your veterinarian may recommend checking a stool sample to see if this is part of the problem. I would also recommend that you have Princess spayed to prevent future litters of kittens. Unspayed female cats are at higher risk for developing mammary cancer later in life and uterine infections.

I recommend taking Princess to a vet. As cats age they can develop multiple different systemic diseases which they can develop these symptoms. The most common being diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Your vet can run blood work to see if she has any of these and discuss treatment with you. Poor Precious. It sounds like she is really sick. This could be liver or kidney disease, parasites, a bad urinary tract infection or even something more serious like cancer. I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do some bloodwork to help determine why she may be acting this way. Your vet will also be able to assess her hydration and give her fluids if needed. They will be able to start her on some medicine to hopefully make her feel better. I'm sorry to hear Rusty is having problems urinating. She could have a urinary tract infection, urinary crystals, or potentially cystitis, which is inflammation of the bladder. I would also be concerned about gas and/or constipation as this can make a cat's abdomen look distended. I would recommend you take Rusty in for an exam with your veterinarian. She likely needs to have her urine checked and her abdomen palpated. Normally we can feel most of the organs in a cat's abdomen. After a good physical exam and abdominal palpation, your vet should be able to have a better idea as to what is going on with her abdomen and how to proceed. Sometimes we need to use further imaging, like x-rays or ultrasound if we can't feel what is going on. My hope is that it's a simple infection that can be treated with some antibiotics. Good luck!

Sounds like your cat has something affecting her nervous system and it is pretty severe. He nerves innervate the eyes, influence her stance, her gait and also her mentation (ability to be aware of her surroundings). Several things can affect the nervous system including toxins, chemicals, liver shunts, primary brain stem lesions and tumors, and severe liver disease. I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet for baseline bloodwork and radiographs to start. Her lab work findings will help them pinpoint what is going on with her internally so that you can best help your furry friend. There really isn't much you can do for her at home until you know exactly what is going on with her and then get the vet to prescribe medications to help her condition. I hope she feels better soon.

Older kitties definitely have a harder time cleaning their back end usually from arthritis. Because she is leaking urine, I would be worried about a urinary tract infection or a possible stone causing issues with normal urination. I recommend a vet exam to rule out the above concerns. They may need to check her urine or take a radiograph. If all checks out, they can discuss medications to help with arthritis pain. Good luck and kisses to Kitty!

Cats often are not constipated but are having diarrhea. With her age I would be concerned about a disease causing a decreased appetite. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for blood work and possible x-rays. At this age kidney disease, cancer and hyperthyroidism are very common. Also bad dental disease can cause a change in appetite. She most likely has an underlying disease that is causing her these secondary issues. I do not think changing her diet will be enough to make her feel better. A veterinarian visit is best. Hope she feels better soon
