My cat walks into things, seems blind, but vets say he's fine. Why?

It may not be his time yet but he does need to be examined by the veterinarian today. The disorientation and potential blindness is concerning for low blood sugar, hypertension, a brain tumor and a few other conditions. Some of these conditions respond very well to treatment and some don't but first, you must know what is happening so you know the treatment options. It is not normal at all that Leo's pupils stay wide when he has a light shined near them. They should constrict in the presence of light. This can be a sign that Leo is blind, and I would have him seen by a vet today. The vet can confirm he is blind. If Leo is blind, it is recommend to making him an indoor only cat if he isn't already one.

This does not sound normal and I recommend to have her examined today. A blind cat generally does not have trouble walking. Instead they tend to walk slowly and cautiously but they are not unbalanced. A sudden onset of neurological signs is always concerning and could indicate poisoning, a stroke from a blood clot or even potentially infectious diseases which can infect humans like Toxoplasmosis. Disorientation, vision and weight loss can all be signs of severe kidney disease and blood pressure or diabetes and i recommend an urgent check up and blood panel to investigate underlying causes. It is hard to know if her vision was affected to cause her to hit her head, or the other way around?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m sorry to hear about Topaz’s troubles! I’m concerned Topaz may not be seeing well or may have gone blind. There are certain conditions, such as retinal detachment, that can occur all of a sudden - so even though she was seen by a vet last month, I definitely recommend taking her in again now that there’s a new concern. The circling behavior could be because she’s trying to figure out her surroundings if she’s having trouble seeing, or could indicate a neurological problem. Definitely worth having a vet take a look to localize the issue. Hope this helps!

He may be having vision problems, high blood pressure or might have had a seizure. If his pupils are wide open, please take him to an out of hours or emergency veterinarian now. He may have high blood pressure and fast intervention can reverse any blindness caused by this. If his pupils are normal and react normally, take him to a vet tomorrow for an exam.

I am not quite sure. It may be that you are seeing a severely dilated pupil. Some disease can cause hypertension, which if unmanaged for some time, can cause damage to the retina which causes a dilated pupil and blindness. I would recommend that you have Tiger examined by the vet. They can look at the eye and do bloodwork and blood pressure testing to see what is going on. Some of these cases can be reverse, while others the blindness will be permanent.
