Brown crust on my female cat's vulva: Is it an infection?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

Hi :) I’ve noticed my fixed, indoor & female cat that is 2 years old has all the sudden developed this brownish “crust” around her vagina. Although it looks like feces it is not. Her rectum is right above. The photos won’t attach :( I am worried it’s some sort of infection or vaginitis or uti but I have no Idea. (she is also the only single pet in the household) she had a feces issue where it was stuck on her butt a couple weeks ago and I had to put her in the bath and squirt her butt off.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zuri!

I find that crust develops around the anus and vulva of overweight cats. They can not reach those areas to groom. I recommend having Zuri lose weight if overweight and in the mean time wipe her anus and vulva once to twice daily with an unscented or water baby wipe.

I wish you the best!
