Why does my cat throw up undigested food after eating in the morning?

It's possible Luna may just have some minor GI upset, or she is going too long in between meals if this has only happened twice and she is otherwise normal and happy. Other possibilities can include something such as a hairball that is leading to vomiting. Offering a bland meal after she vomits, or increasing the number of meals she gets per day may help with anything minor. If the vomiting continues, worsens, she shows other signs of illness, or you are just very concerned about it, it is always best to schedule a veterinary visit to rule out more serious issues. Internal parasites, GI illness, metabolic diseases, etc can all potentially cause vomiting as a symptom, so a complete exam is best to rule out any more serious problems.

Poor Sweetie! In older cats, I would be concerned that the vomiting is caused by kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a foreign body, or intestinal lymphoma. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to determine what is causing her vomiting. Once the cause is found, the vet can recommend a possible treatment.

Sometimes cats will vomit first thing in the morning as their stomachs are empty and the acid and bile can irritate the gut lining and cause them to be sick. Usually this does no harm but if occurring frequently gastroprotectants can help. If it is occurring more mornings than not or the cat seems ill otherwise, I would have him checked out by a vet. In general, you can continue to feed smaller portions and go with an easily digestible diet such as limited ingredient diets (i.e. Iams, Purina, Evo). Eating too fast is not a common reason for vomiting in cats, despite the fact that you can find this misleading information over the internet too often. chronic vomiting in cats is almost always a sign of a medical problem, the most common conditions causing this are pancreatitis, IBD and lymphoma. another common condition is kidney failure but it is not common at this age. i would recommend taking Arlo to the vet in order to get it checked and treated ASAP.
