My cat is throwing up prescription kidney food and barely eating.

Hi there. It's certainly possible that vomiting could be due to progression of her kidney disease, but could also be due to a number of other issues such as a simple upset stomach, or some other illness such as hyperthyroidism or pancreatitis. I would recommend taking her back to the vet tomorrow for a recheck, to see what her lab values look like and determine if any new problems have popped up. Your veterinarian can advise you on what should be done in terms of treatment from there.

Unfortunately, this could be a number of things. The first thing I tend to think of in older cats in which renal disease has already been diagnosed is the development of a urinary tract infection, and especially if urinary signs (urinating outside the box, increased frequency of urination, increased drinking, etc) that should be considered. Kidney disease predisposes them to the development of UTI's, and they can quickly become serious in these patients as often times it's not a LOWER UTI (i.e. a bladder infection) but an UPPER UTI (i.e., involving the kidneys). At this point she's only missed one meal, so I wouldn't panic yet - especially because she did eat when you hand fed her. However, do be diligent and consider whether she needs another checkup (to include a urinalysis and potentially x-rays or ultrasound) if this keeps up more than 24 hours, since it's such unusual behavior for her.

Poor Sweetie! In older cats, I would be concerned that the vomiting is caused by kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a foreign body, or intestinal lymphoma. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to determine what is causing her vomiting. Once the cause is found, the vet can recommend a possible treatment.

Poor Bella! Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

It is important to note that elderly feline patients with chronic renal disease are much more likely to dehydrate than your average kitty. Some thing you will want to check for at home for evidence of dehydration is the moistness on the gum line as well as the pink / paleness, the skin turgor (the skin should return to the body when you pull on it). Dehydrated cats will also usually appear weak, lethargic and unwilling to perform some normal activities. Without having your cat in front of me, I would say that an actively vomiting cat with chronic renal disease should be seen tonight for sure IF the vomiting continues even once more. If you decide to hold off on going for now, that may be OK. You can consider trying to give something for the vomiting like pepsid or prilosec, though unfortunately I am unable to offer doses. I am sorry to hear your cat is not feeling well. If this medication was prescribed by your veterinarian and your cat is still vomiting despite the medication then I would seek veterinary care immediately. If the medication was NOT prescribed by your veterinarian then please do not give any more, and take your cat in for evaluation. You do not mention how old the kitty is-any number of issues could be going on. A foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract, a gastrointestinal infection, dietary indiscretion, a cancerous process, even renal failure can cause the symptoms you have noted. Your cat needs a thorough physical exam and your vet May recommend some diagnostics such as xrays and bloodwork. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

It sounds as Lexy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet urgently, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
