Why is my cat throwing up clear, has wet poop, and coughing?

Hi, thanks for your question. It's unusual to see vomiting and coughing at the same time, although it's possible. Typically, though, the cat is just retching and nothing is coming up. It's likely, especially if your cat is bringing up stomach contents from time to time, that this is solely a GI problem. Vomiting can have a number of causes. Depending on how old your cat is, whether it goes outside, etc, one possibility might be more likely than another. Here are some possibilities: parasites, food intolerance/dietary indiscretion (eating something that made her sick), exposure to a toxin, a blockage either in the stomach or intestines, kidney disease, liver disease, diseases of the pancreas, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. As you can see these are all very different diseases. Your vet can help you figure you what's going on with a good physical exam and some tests, probably blood work and x-rays to start with. Get your cat seen as soon as you can.

Cats can vomit for a number of reasons, including trying to vomit a hairball, eating something they shouldn't have, gastrointestinal obstruction, infection, inflammation, or even cancer. From the information you provided, my concern is that Mittens may have aspirated (taken fluid into the lungs) during one of these vomiting episodes, and is now coughing as a result. Aspiration pneumonia can be a scary thing in cats, and especially if Mittens is not acting himself or wanting to eat, I would recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to be examined. If your veterinarian determines that he has abnormal lung sounds, he/she may recommend blood work and chest x-rays to look for evidence of pneumonia. If present, they will likely start Mittens on some antibiotics. There are other possibilities for Mitten's cough including bronchitis or an upper airway infection, which should also be managed by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

I would recommend that Pussy be checked out by a vet as soon as possible. Her symptoms could be caused by intestinal parasites (worms, coccidia, giardia), bacterial or viral infection (panleukopenia), IBD, intestinal lymphoma, food allergies, among a few others. From the picture, I am also concerned that she may have a prolapsed rectum. This can occur with straining during diarrhea. Sometimes this prolapse will require surgery to put it back in place and allow it the chance to heal. A vet may recommend intestinal parasite screening or viral testing to determine the cause of her illness and prescribe appropriate treatment. Unfortunately, without physically examining Pussy, it is illegal for us to make any specific medication recommendations.

Hi there. I would have Kunsel seen by a vet. Vomiting and loose stool can be caused by a reaction to food, parasites or a virus, but when it's been going on for a few days she does need treatment. Your vet will be able to find out what's causing it and get her on meds to get her feeling better. Hello, Vomiting can occur with dietary indiscretion but also intestinal obstructions, parasites, inflammation of pancreas, kidney or liver. If vomiting persists, I would advise you to follow up with Puma’s veterinarian to discuss abdominal x-rays, bloodwork and a fecal exam.

The symptoms you have described including regurgitation, blood in stool, coughing and gurgling are concerning for esophageal dysfunction and gastroenteritis. The underlying cause will likely require x-rays, bloodwork, and an abdominal ultrasound to rule in or out an intestinal obstruction, inflammation of the pancreas, or primary intestinal disease including infection, inflammation or even cancer. There could be several things that is causing your cat to vomit. Some of the more common things that cause vomiting and anorexia in a cat are gastritis (inflammation of the stomach wall), pancreatitis, intestinal parasites, and irritable bowel disease. I would withhold food from your cat for about 24 hours to give the stomach some time to rest. If she is continuing to vomit or still not eating after this, then I would recommend taking her in to see your vet. They can give her nausea medication and fluids if she is dehydrated.
