My cat vomits after treats. What's causing it and is it serious?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Vomiting in cats can be caused by several things, but vomiting right after eating does bring to mind a couple of possibilities. But you first have to differentiate whethere whether Coix is vomting (obvious retching and forceful expulsion) or regurgitating (undigested food just seems to come out without much effort). Vomiting can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, megaesophagus (typically causes regurgitation), a parasitic infection (not as common), or even an underlying congenital disorder. Most of these conditions are treatable. You should first start with some diagnostic testing to gather more information on your specific pets condition. Then we will know what needs to be done for Coix to help control his vomiting episodes a bit better. In general, you can continue to feed smaller portions and go with an easily digestible diet such as limited ingredient diets (i.e. Iams, Purina, Evo). This is something you can easily start while awaiting a proper vet visit and diagnostic work-up for Coix. Hello, cats in general do not drink much water, so I'm not surprised she didn't drink. Additionally, she seems to be eating and tolerating the bland diet nicely. Its likely that she had a sensitivity t the mackerel treat you offered her and this caused the vomiting. Continue to feed her the bland diet for another day or 2 then transition her back to her normal dry food. As long as her GI signs have resolved, then you do not need to do anything else about this. If her GI signs, reoccur, you will need to have your veterinarian evaluate her. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Temptations and Greenies are not very digestible which is why they can cause stomach upset. Commericial treats such as these can be highly processed, contain a variety of aritcial ingredients and flavors and contain high fat and low fiber content with fillers in them which can cause GI upset. A good alternative would be Smittens cat treats by Honest Kitchen which are all natural. I hope this helps!

If she is eating, drinking, playing and doesn't continue to vomit I wouldn't worry too much. It could have been from a hair ball, the treat upset her, she was full or from excitement. I would avoid that treat for a while. Be sure she has been dewormed well, has had her stool tested and is up to date on vaccines. I hope this helps!

Yes, rich and fatty foods for pets can cause vomiting and may even trigger problems such as pancreatitis which requires veterinary treatment. Cats can also eat until they're overfull if given too much at once. I would avoid giving any broth or extras that cause vomiting (and especially if he's overweight) and try to spread out his meals to 3-4 smaller meals throughout the day so he is still eating enough, but isn't able to gorge himself at once. If the vomiting continues, a workup from your vet is best.

In an otherwise healthy cat that has chronic vomiting episodes, it sounds like Rigby may have a condition called inflammatory bowel disease. This is common in cats and is difficult to diagnose (requires an intestinal biopsy). I would ask the vet to consider this diagnosis and then they can prescribe the correct treatment for it to try and see if he has some improvement with his vomiting. Treatment usually involves a highly digestible prescription diet (or comparable over the counter diet such as California Natural by Natura) and steroids. It would be honestly hard to say without an exam. Some possible causes could be a food-based one (IE an allergy to an ingredient in the wet food that is causing a reaction after eating it) or a functional one such as a problem with the esophagus or digestive tract's ability to move the food through the body (something very common in cats). An exam would be a good idea to help rule out these causes through either some testing such as X-rays, or through a food trial to see if an ingredient can be ruled out. Until you can get to your vet, offering smaller meals more frequently may help with keeping food down and minimizing discomfort after eating.
