My cat vomited and then fainted. What's wrong? Is he in danger?

Hello. Very good! You may have indeed hit on the cause of Momo's spells. But it is just as important to rule out any other issues, especially anything connected to the heart or high blood pressure. I would definitely mention this to your vet at his next visit to make sure the chest is auscultated for any murmurs or arrhythmias. There is really not much you can do about the vagal stimulation, but perhaps a small amount of hairball laxative several times a week will decrease the chance of Momo needing to vomit up any more hairballs. Dogs can collapse and faint because of vomiting. This is a reflex when vomiting process is stimulating a nerve that slows down the heart rate and dogs may faint as a result of that. The recovery is usually rapid and the dog is back on the feet within seconds. If that what has happened to Aries, you can monitor him at home for the next 15-30 min. If it was only the reflex, he should be back to normal by now. If he is still staggering or looking confused please take him to your local vets as an emergency. Vomiting and balance problem can be related to ear infections, intoxication or even neurological diseases.

Sometimes when we, or animals, vomit, as cats sometimes do with hairballs, this can put pressure on a nerve that runs through the stomach that can cause us to become weak and defecate due to changes in blood pressure. If this was the case then Blaze should have returned to normally very quickly after the episode and be 100% normal now. The other possible cause is that Blaze could have an underlying heart condition that is causing a weakness, or could have aspirated (some of the vomit went into his lungs). If Blaze is still breathing up, or acting abnormally, or if the collapse episodes occur again, I would have him into the vet right away. If he is completely normal now then I would just monitor him and have your vet check out Blaze's heart at your next exam for vaccines. Best of luck with Blaze.

Poor Ginger! His abnormal breathing could be a result of an upper airway obstruction (i.e. foreign material stuck in his airways), heart disease, asthma, pneumonia, etc., any of which could lead to decreased oxygen supply and a fainting episode. Underlying heart disease could also cause him to fall over if an arrhythmia is present. At this point, this sounds like an emergency condition that should be evaluated by an emergency vet immediately. I hope that all goes well!

This very concerning. Your kitty could have had an epileptic seizure or a so-called syncope. Syncopes are caused by the brain not getting enough oxygenized blood, which in turn causes the cat to get unconscious, or a seizure like episode. These syncopes are often caused by heart disease or, in a case of a young animal, it could be a sign of a congenital defect. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, and do mention this episode to your vet. You may want to write down the particulars, so your vet gets as accurate a description as possible from you. This said, it also may have just been a one-time occurrence, with unknown cause.

Hi, has Carols heart been checked over ? If so and everything appears to be well, it could be that Carlos is suffering with a neurological episode, a partial seizure.A neurological exam and advanced imaging such an MRI or CT scan will be able together with more specific blood tests and spinal tap, to give more detailed information. However since he has random episodes and he other ways may be normal, I would recommend to film him once he has an episode so that his vet can have a look at it and see exactly what is happening. That sounds scary! Henry needs to be examined by his veterinarian within the next 24 hours. Symptoms like this can be a few things but syncope and seizures are most common. Syncope is a sign of a bad heart. Pets can have seizures for many reasons including liver disease, idiopathic, electrolyte imbalance, infections, inner ear problems, cancer or epilepsy. He will need a physical exam and bloodwork to begin to narrow down and appropriately address the cause. Seizures are serious and are best addressed early.
