Cat home from vet with UTI, grunting in pain. What should I do?

This unfortunately is very concerning and is quite possibly a medical emergency situation for your pet Nacho. Nacho cannot be helped st home because it is possible he may have a urinary blockage and in need or a urinary catheter to provide him relief. Urinary tract infections are 1) not common in male cats and 2) Dont cause a lot of vocalization in the cat, therefore I suspect a urinary blockage is the actual culprit. I am hopeful that you can find someone to help you with Nacho so that you can take him in for life saving procedures. Poor Kitty Kins. It sounds like he has either lower urinary tract disease, stones or has a partial urinary blockage. None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You are doing the right thing by feeding him canned food, as this will increase his water intake and help promote a healthy bladder. However if he does become completely blocked (blocked Tom), he will need emergency procedures to free up the blockage and empty his bladder, as they mentioned already. I totally understand not being able to do the procedure the first time around due to cost. Unfortunately this cost is pretty standard for these types of things. Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. Hi, it does sound like Chibi is having troubles passing urine. In terms of what you need to do, he needs to be seen by a vet his condition is classed as an emergency. The fact he can't urinate properly but just droplets and that he has retched and refused to eat, can indicate that the inability of pass urine is causing all the waste products to be reabsorbed in his blood. As time goes by he will progressively get worse, so I recommend you try to get hold of your vet explaining you think it is an emergency and 24 hours is too long to wait. Apart from offering water, he needs to have some treatment for urethral obstruction, there is nothing you can do at home apart from keeping him indoors, try to avoid unnecessary stress, make sure he is in a cool room.. and most importantly try to find a vet. If you have any antinflammatories, stop them for the time being as we think he might not be able to urinate and can make his kidneys worse as well as causing Gastro-intestinal issues.

I'm sorry to hear that Duck is still so uncomfortable! Most cats show significant improvement with respect to their UTI signs within 2 days of antibiotic treatment. Since Duck is still vocalizing in the litter box, his infection may be resistant to the antibiotics being used. I recommend calling his vet because it may be necessary to perform a urine culture to determine to which antibiotics his infection is sensitive. Continue monitoring the size of his urine clumps and go to an ER vet if the clump sizes become significantly smaller or if he stops urinating altogether. I hope that Duck feels better soon!

Hi and thank you for submitting your question about Moustachio (neat name!). His lack of urination for 12 hours is concerning. If he really has gone 12 hours without any urination, you will need to take him back into your veterinarian's office. Male cats do tend to get mucous plugs or stones which can block the urethra and lead to difficulty or the inability to urinate. Not eating or drinking anything either in 12hours is also a concern that needs to be addressed today with the veterinarian who saw and treated Moustachio yesterday. I hope this has helped. What you described definitely sounds like a urinary blockage or infection. I recommend bringing Cookie in for an emergency visit for several reasons - first, this condition can be very painful and uncomfortable; second, if Cookie is unable to urinate, the urine will continue to build up in his bladder and can backflow to his kidneys, causing kidney damage and for the toxins that are normally filtered by the kidneys to stay in the body. This can make Cookie very sick and worsen his prognosis for recovery. He will need to be stabilized by a veterinarian.
