My cat has UTI symptoms. Can I treat it at home with amoxicillin?

He should be examined by a vet before giving any medication, especially if he is not eating. He may have an infection but a vet should look at him first to decide if Amoxicillin is the best antibiotic to use. He may also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Please call your vet and have him examined. Your vet can check a urine sample to look for an infection or other diseases that can cause blood in the urine. Hope he feels better soon!

No, your vet must check your cat before he can prescribe any treatment for suspected UTI. UTI is not common in cats, most cats with symptoms of UTI actually suffer from a bladder inflammation that is stress related and the treatment for this condition is completely different than the treatment for UTI.

Yes this is normal. Most urinary tract "infections" in non-geriatric cats are not caused by bacteria (antibiotics kill bacteria) but inflammation caused by stress. This is called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis. So Prednisone does two things: It takes the inflammation whch in turn takes the pain, and it is also a diuretic which helps flush the bladder. Male cats also seldom have a bacterial cystitis as the urethra is much longer than a female's urethra and therefore bacteria would have to travel much farther to get into the bladder.

In cats with urinary irritation, wet food is preferable to help reduce urine concentration and flush out the bladder. I strongly recommend a urine exam in order to determine exactly what is going on and to guide the most appropriate treatment (infection/inflammation etc). A sample can be collected using special urine collection litter which does not absorb urine. Petco provide a home kit for detecting UTI which can help to monitor such conditions

She probably has cystitis and not a UTI. It is not impossible that she has a UTI concurrently but I think cystitis is more likely. Antibiotics will not help that. She needs to be on pain meds and you need to de-stress the environment. The most common cause for urinary tract problems in cats are feline interstitial cystitis, crystals in the urine and bladder stones. We can not diagnose diseases over the internet or provide drug doses with out actually examining the patient as it is against the law. For one, it's never recommended to self treat your cat's health problems as you may accidentally do more harm than good. In addition, URI in cats are typically caused by viruses, so antibiotics will not help at all. I would have Myla seen by a vet. The vet can prescribe medications to treat her symptoms.
