My cat has URI, shivers & drools on antibiotics. Should I see vet?

It can take several days for an antibiotic to take effect against a bacterial infection, but not all upper respiratory infections are bacterial in origin. Many are actually viral which will have to run their course with supportive care. The drooling and foaming at the mouth can sometimes be seen shortly after administering oral medications such as Clavamox since they taste badly to cats. Matted fur could be caused by not feeling well enough to groom. Not eating is common in cats that can't smell well since they are smell-driven when eating. I would recommend that you try to give Sam water or pedialyte to stay hydrated, and try "smelly" cat food such as canned cat food or canned tuna. If he isn't better tomorrow, becomes profoundly lethargic, or you cannot get food or water into him, then he should be re-evaluated by your vet for other treatment options or even hospitalization.

If the Vet suspected a URI they are usually viral in nature and the antibiotics are used to prevent secondary bacterial infections. I wouldn't expect a viral infection to resolve in 12 hours sadly. If Turbo still has a fever he may benefit from being hospitalized on IV fluids. If they didn't run blood work I would request full blood work including urine and Feline leukemia and FIV testing (even if previously tested as a kitten). If Turbo hasn't developed any signs of a URI he needs a work up for a fever of unknown origin, which requires blood work, feline retroviral testing, X-rays and possibly an ultrasound. These tests are trying to find a cause for the fever (infection, inflammation, cancer). I am hoping it is just viral and he needs more time. But sometimes that time needs to be spent in the hospital on fluids. I hope this helps and I wish Turbo a speedy recovery!

It may take 7-10 days for the condition to resolve. As long as he is still eating, breathing normal, and has normal energy then continue the medications as directed and monitor his condition. If he has a viral infection then it will need to just run it's course as the antibiotics will only treat a bacterial infection. If he stops eating, becomes lethargic, or has any breathing issues then he should be rechecked by a vet.

This may be a virus and not a bacterial infection. If that's the case antibiotics will not help and the virus needs to run its course which can take up to two weeks. As long as she isn't getting worse, running a fever and is eating I would keep monitoring her. If at any time she does get worse or isn't getting any better after 7-10 days, I would call your veterinarian. Let her rest unless she wants to play. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pou. Drooling is typically the result of nausea, oral pain or ingesting something with a bad taste. He will need to see his veterinarian if his symptoms persist. If he did acquire the respiratory infection from his housemate, then post-nasal drop could be making him nauseous. There may still be inflammation in his mouth causing the drooling. I'd give it a few more days to see if the drooling improves. If not please take him in for a recheck to make sure the gingivitis has improved. He may need additional antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication. Since there are still symptoms of the infection then he needs to be rechecked for further treatment. Some cats need pulse therapy medicine to help keep it under control. Also a lot of upper respiratory infections in cats are viral induced and take time to fully resolve. They do make anti virals you can add to the food to help clear the infection also
