My cat is tired and inactive in summer heat. How can I keep him cool?

Unfortunately, those are very vague symptoms, so the best course of action would be to see a vet when you can if they continue. Heat can definitely make things worse and may make it so your cat wants to stay low or on tile that is cooler. Making sure he has access to water at all times and cool shaded spots to sleep in may help. However, if he doesn't perk up even with the weather cools, can't urinate at all, or shows any other signs of illness, trying to find a vet near you ASAP is best.

Fast breathing can be a normal way for you pet to cool himself. If the house is tolerable for you then it is likely tolerable for your pet. However, labored breathing and open mouth breathing in a cat usually indicate a more serious problem concerning the lungs and a vet visit right away is highly recommended. However, good ways to keep a pet cool is to set up fans in the home (if A/C is not in place), therefore when the pet gets hot he can just sit in front of the fan to cool off. Floor fans can be purchased from your local hardware store or department store. Keeping water available at all times is also helpful. That's extremely hot for a cat, and Gizmo could easily get heat stroke. Put a fan in front of him to cool him down, and make sure he has cool water to drink. Offer him wet food, as that has a high moisture content and will get water into him. You can also soak his food in some tuna juice from canned tuna packed in spring water. I hope this helps.

You can try keeping them indoors with a fan or increasing the shade they have. Sometimes doing slightly cool water by placing a few ice cubes in their dish is helpful as well. If they start having any sort of nasal discharge, become week are they have pale or discolored gums they need to be seen by veterinarian immediately.

If they are suffering from a heat stroke they would be showing signs of true distress like heavy or open mouth breathing, lethargy, vomiting, etc). If he is showing any of these signs then he needs immediate care of a veterinarian. You can put some water on him and put a fan over him but be careful because they can eventually get too cold because they have a hard time regulating their own temperature when they have a heat stroke. If he isn't having the symptoms above and just wanting to cook him off on a warm day then yes you can use a little water to mist him and also make sure he has plenty of shade and water. Dogs can handle the heat fine if they are lazy and not expending much energy. You can give him cool water with a small amount of chicken broth in it to encourage drinking, or add some water to his food. Using a fan to circulate the air may cool you both.
