My cat is throwing up nightly for a week. What could be wrong?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Groucho! The blood indicates stomach lining ulceration. Vomiting once a week is a lot. Possible causes are: food allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, stomach cancer, GI lymphoma, kidney or liver failure, hyperthyroidism. I recommend an exam, full senior blood work and belly X-rays. Sometimes a belly ultrasound is also needed. But he could respond to a prescription diet. I wish you and Groucho the best!

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many different reasons why cats will vomit periodically. It could be an allergy or sensitivity to the food, to inflammation anywhere in the GI tract, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, and many more. These cases can be extremely frustrating and take lots of testing to figure out because of this. The first thing I recommend is screening blood work to look for organ dysfunction that could lead to vomiting. In the vast majority of cats who are acting normal other than the vomiting, the blood work is usually normal. X-rays are also performed to look for any obvious change in organ shape or size and to look for obstruction, masses, etc. Beyond that, the testing gets more involved and typically involves an abdominal ultrasound. Sometime this can give you an answer. Other times the only way to confirm a diagnosis is through biopsies of the affected organs. The other thing that is commonly recommended is a change in diet. If there is an ingredient that she is sensitive to, we want to try to eliminate it from her diet. This is best done with a prescription diet because over-the-counter diets can be contaminated with ingredients that are not on the label. Food trials need to be done for at least 6 to 8 weeks and they can't eat anything else during this time. If the vomiting resolves with the new diet, I recommend keeping her on that diet long-term.

If the vomiting has been occurring for months, I would advise that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian. There are many causes of vomiting including worms/parasites in the intestines, dietary indiscretion (eating things he is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, hairballs, infection/inflammation, foreign bodies, hairballs, problems with internal organs, etc. Your veterinarian can assess Frankie and then formulate a diagnostic plan which might include physical exam, intestinal worm exam, blood tests, and possibly some imaging studies like x-ray, ultrasound, or endoscopy (a special scope with a camera on it). Once a diagnosis is made a treatment plan can be made. I hope Frankie gets better soon.

Vomiting can occur from many conditions such as kidney disease, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Peaches evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. Unfortunately, these signs are rather vague, and can be caused by a number of conditions including hair balls, intestinal parasites, inappropriate diet, and other more serious conditions such as certain cancers. I recommend having Mel seen by his vet to determine exactly what is going on. You can try feeding a bland diet at home, making sure he gets plenty of water, and grooming Mel to limit hair balls. Possible causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), are something that is causing a blockage, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, hair balls, food allergy/intolerance. Cats with nausea or underlying intestinal disease like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like to lick cardboard, eat paper products, etc. Since she is under 1 year of age and she is known to lick (at least) foreign objects, a blockage is high on the list. If she continues to vomit I would have her seen today before the weekend for an exam and belly X-rays. If everything looks good the Vet can provide a GI diet, anti-nausea and maybe a hair ball remedy. I wish Harley the best!

Vomiting in cats is a nonspecific sign and can indicate a number or things including inflammatory bowel disease, kidney problems, thyroid issues, dietary sensitivity, or an intestinal obstruction. If Lucy is otherwise acting normally you could try a diet like Hill's Science Diet for sensitive stomach to see if this helps. However, if Lucy is having other issues, if she is vomiting frequently, or she continues to vomit despite the diet change then she should be examined by a veterinarian.
