My cat has tapeworms. What can I do before a vet or with OTC?

Hello. This is definitely a tapeworm. Go to https://www.chewy.com ( or check with your local pet retailer ) & pick up Bayer tapeworm de-wormer for cats. That will take care of the problem for now. Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and I am happy to help. You can get a product called Bayer Quad Dewormer and use it on Taz as long as he is over 2lbs. Instruction will be on the package. Give it with food to decrease the potential for GI upset. Tapeworms come from fleas so be sure to keep him current on flea prevention. Your veterinarian will carry the best products like Nexgard but for now, you can use name brand Frontline or Advantage/Advantix. I also recommend and agree with you to get him into the vet to be checked for other parasites. If he has one type, he may have others. Some of these parasites can spread to humans so it's important to keep up with routine checks and treatment. I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out any time.

Hello. Since you wormed her for the tapeworms, it is a good idea to also worm for roundworms & hookworms. You should be able to easily find this at PetSmart, just look for anything that indicates it has pyrantel pamoate in it & just follow the label directions. That is a lovely kitty you have there! If the worm you saw looked like a little squirmy grain of rice, then Cadbury has tapeworms. This is easily treated with a cat wormer that contains praziquantel. You should be able to get that from your vet, or over the counter from a pet shop. You can also order it over the internet. Drontal for cats would be such a wormer.

Tapeworms are killed by a medication called praziquantel, which is prescription only. A dewormer containing that can only be gotten at the vet. A great deworming medication is Drontal which kills tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. OTC dewormers will only kill roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. Personally I always recommend a deworming medication from the vet, as they are stronger and better than anything you get OTC. Drontal is safe and healthy for kittens. Bambi should get a dewormer now, and another in two weeks. After that she will need to be dewormed monthly until she is six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. It's perfectly safe to give them a deworming medication even if they don't have worms, it prevents them from occurring. I never recommend getting OTC flea and tick medications. Many brands of them, such as Hartz, are terrible products that do not work and can have serious side effects in cats. I personally recommend getting a flea and tick medication from the vet such as Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. When you make an appointment with the vet to get her vaccines, you can also get the deworming treatment as well as the flea and tick medication. I hope this helps!

Hello. There are wormers available over the counter that will take care of tapeworms. Make sure the product contains the ingredient praziquantel, or you can pick up SafeGuard canine wormer at Petco. If you want to be sure of what you might be seeing befors giving Poppy any wormer, you can always take a fecal sample to your vet for analysis.
