What to do about my new mom cat's swollen teats and kitten scratches?

Your baby may be suffering from mastitis (inflammation of the mammary gland). This is very painful and you really need to take her to the vet for an exam. and pain medicine and antibiotics if called for. In the meantime you can put warm moist compresses on the teat. This should relieve some of the pain temporarily.

It looks like KuKKu may have mastitis (an infection in the mammary glands). I suggest you have her checked by a vet. She will need treatment that you can't provide at home. This presentation is likely to be caused by a mastitis, which is an inflammation/infection of the mammary glands quite common in post-lactating feline patients. A check up would be ideally required to confirm this clinical, suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

This is a common problem when the babies are not weened off of them. They are full of milk. Many times the milk will be absorbed by the body and not be a problem. Sometimes an infection can start though. You can help relieve the pressure by placing a towel soaked with warm water over the teets for 20minutes twice a day. This help relax and soothe the area. They should start to get smaller within a week. It will take a few weeks before they go all the way down though. Watch for these signs of an infection: 1) The teets start to look red or blue. The veins will naturally give a blue appearance, but in an infection the skin will turn blue or red. 2) Blood or blood-tinged fluid dripping from the teat. If you think it looks infected, then you will need to take her to a veterinarian, so they can diagnose and treat the infection. I hope that helps and Candy feels better soon.

I recommend trying to get a large dog kennel, and putting food inside, and coaxing her inside with the food, and then closing the door in order to get her to the vet. You can also try getting a thick blanket and throwing it over her and then wrapping her up and putting that in a large box, and slowly pulling the blanket out (so she isn't sitting in the hot box wrapped in a hot blanket). Hello. It is a little tough to tell exactly what is going on, so if you have a chance to let your vet take a look, that would be best. Are you having problems with fleas? That might be one reason he is so scratched up. Bathing in Dawn will help to control the fleas until he is old enough for a flea preventative. If not, then I would pick up a skin cleanser like Hibiclens at any pharmacy, dilute it about 50:50 with water & clean the irritated areas twice daily. Hopefully, this will clear up quickly. Based on what you are describing I would be concerned about a catfight wound that has caused abscesses. Often times if one cat bites another the wounds become infected and form large swellings. These can be painful and require antibiotics to heal. Your cat may have been injured since she is in heat by a male cat trying to mate with her. I would recommend taking your cat into the vet to be checked out to make sure there is no infection going on. If it is not infection causing the swelling then she may be having an allergic reaction to something, like a insect bite or sting.
