My cat won't take antibiotics. Will her surgical wound heal if I stop?

This is a common problem with cats and it's likely that most of them don't get their full dose due to spitting or accidental wastage. While it's best to make sure she gets the full dose, there will be some effect even if she gets a little. I usually don't prescribe antibiotics for extractions unless there appears to be a bad infection. I'm sure your vet prescribed them for good reason, but you can always call and ask how important they are and let them know that it's nearly impossible to give. They may advise you to stop the medication, or have an alternative solution to the problem. I hope that helps and Vivian gets better soon.

If the vet prescribed it, then yes it is important to give to Matias as prescribed. I would see if you can hide it in food to give to him, or have a friend or family member help you give it to him. If you are really struggling, give the vet who prescribed it a call and they may be able to give you a liquid antibiotic to give him, which would be easier to administrate. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can try mixing Sushi's antibiotics with a small amount of canned food or plain boiled chicken and trying to feed it to her. There is also a product known as "Pill Pockets" that you can squeeze the antibiotic into. I hope this helps and that all is well with Sushi!

If the antibiotic is causing some stomach upset, contact your veterinarian and request a different antibiotic. You can also ask for an injectable antibiotic, such as Convenia, which will bypass his gastrointestinal system. Subcutaneous fluids can be adminstered to maintain hydration. Warm his food slightly or mix in some plain baby food to stimulate his appetite. If he won't eat, you may need to syringe feed him. If there is an abscess from the bite wound, it needs to be lanced and drained. Pain medication may be needed. Do not medicate him with any over the counter medicines. Many can be toxic to cats.

It's not going to hurt him to give Augmentin once a day, but it's just going to be slower to help. I would be concerned that this cat has some type of immunosuppressive disease, such as feline AIDs or feline leukemia, that's making it difficult for him to heal. If you can get any vet to help you there is an injectable antibiotic for animals called Convenia; one injection lasts for 2 weeks. Perhaps someone could order it for you; that might be your best bet.

I recommend finishing out his liquid antibiotic via oral syringe if you haven’t already. If he is still eating his dry food, then I wouldn’t worry too much about him avoiding canned food for now. You can try putting a very small amount of canned food in his mouth every few days after to show him that the food no longer has a medicinal taste. With patience and time he may start eating canned food on his own again. If he is not eating at all ( including dry food), then I recommend bringing him in to see your veterinarian as complete inappetance for more than 2 days in cats can lead to a very serious condition called hepatic lipidosis. If he is not eating at all, your vet may do additional diagnostics and/or recommend anti-nausea medications and/or appetite stimulants. Good luck!
