Why is my 3-year-old cat suddenly meowing and yowling at the door?

It’s hard to say why Nao is yowling. Some cats are naturally more vocal than others and it may be his temperament. When he exhibits this behavior, definitely look for any obvious stimulus such as seeing a cat or a bird outside. Listen as well for anything that might be triggering the behavior. Otherwise things that you can do that may help to keep him more calm include setting aside 30 minutes every day for vigorous play. Make sure he has high places that he can climb to as this will satisfy his natural instincts. A tall cat tree or shelves are excellent options. You can also use a pheromone diffuser such as feliway. Lastly there is a diet made by Royal Canin called Calm. It affects the serotonin levels in the brain and many cats responded well to this diet. I'm wondering if your cat is neutered or not. If he isn't neutered, he could be wanting to go out to mate with females, and he could be marking his territory by peeing on the wall. If he isn't neutered, I would take him into the vet to have that done. Should he be neutered, he could have an UTI causing him to urinate right where he is, and it would make him uncomfortable, causing him to meow loudly. This would also require a trip to the vet, and I would bring him into one as soon as possible.

A disease known as hyperthyroidism can cause increased vocalizations in a cat. It is usually accompanied an increase in thirst and urination, hyperactivity, possibly vomiting/ diarrhea and weight loss. Unfortunately it's impossible to know why Adik is meowing so much! If the cats are not spayed and neutered, he is more likely to reactive if the female is coming into heat or if there are other un-neutered males outside. If they are not spayed and neutered, I recommend to have this done. This may help to decrease reactivity but it may now fully control it. Other things you can do are related to environmental enrichment. Be sure he is urinating, male cats are at risk for urinary obstructions. Sometimes they vocalized. If he is a senior cat, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can cause increased vocalization. It doesn't really sound like a medical issue but it is always best to have a vet check him out if there is a drastic change in behavior. Medical issues should be ruled out before a behavioral issue can be presumed. If no medical problem is found then it is likely behavioral. He may be bored or needing more stimulation. If it is an abrupt change in behavior, it could signal some kind of discomfort, physical, such as a bladder infection or some other ailment making him painful, or something mentally distressing him, like a strange cat outside, being in a new place. If he seems fine physically, i.e. eating, drinking, eliminating normally, being his usual self, I would keep an eye on it. If you see any symptoms of illness, get him in to see your vet as soon as possible. Check around and see if you can identify when/where it is happening and if there is anything that might be causing him to vocalize.
