How long until my neutered cat's stud tail bald spot hair grows back?

Supracaudal gland hyperplasia or stud tail primarily affects tom cats that are not neutered, however it can sometimes affect females and neutered toms as well. It is caused by an excess amount of male hormones which encourage the production of sebum, an oily or waxy substance, by the supracaudal gland at the base of the tail. Your vet will examine the fur and base of the tail to rule out masses and parasite or bacterial infection. Stud tail is usually treated with antiseborrheic shampoos, which should be used regularly to keep the area clean. If infection is present your kitty needs a course of antibiotics.

Stud tail is commonly seen in intact male cats but can also be seen in neutered males and females. It results in skin disease at the base of the tail. Symptoms and Types: Greasy (sometimes matted) hair at the base of the tail Missing hair at the base of the tail Blackheads (comedones) on the skin at the base of the tail Waxy substance on the skin and hair at the base of the tail Skin infection at the base of the tail A foul odor the condition often does not resolve although in some cases neutering your cat can solve the issue.

Poor Rhu! You can try a little coconut oil in that area to help soothe it. If it is ulcerated, you may also try a little Neosporin ointment. I would also put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking that area. Licking will only may the area worse. If the area isn't healing, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if she needs some oral antibiotics or stronger medicines. It could take 2-6 weeks for the area to regrow depending on how long it takes the skin to heal. Very rarely will these types of wounds scar. If it scars, the hair will not grow back. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing him allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. Even if you have not being able to see fleas, this could still be flea dirt but I agree that it is less likely. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

An oily secretion at the base of the tail can be a condition known as stud tail. He will need to see his veterinarian to be sure and to rule out diseases such as a flea allergy. Hi and thanks for posting! If the infection on his tail is healing or is close to fully healed, it may take 2-4 weeks for the hair to grow back in that area. Sometimes, however if the infection is severe enough and leaves scar tissue in the area, the hair may not grow back fully. I hope this helps and best of luck!
