My cat pulled out matted fur. How long for fur to grow back and heal sore skin?

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old

I have a feral cat named Rhu, she's now tamed, she's a short-haired cat, recently she had matted fur due to feces stuck in it, now yesterday I came home from work and found this patch of fur lying on the floor of my room, she's ripped the matted fur... I'm wondering how long does it take for fur to grow back? And what can I do right now as the area where the fur came from appears sore, is there anything I can do? Anything I can put on to help heal and keep it clean? It's under her tail.

Poor Rhu! You can try a little coconut oil in that area to help soothe it. If it is ulcerated, you may also try a little Neosporin ointment. I would also put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking that area. Licking will only may the area worse. If the area isn't healing, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if she needs some oral antibiotics or stronger medicines. It could take 2-6 weeks for the area to regrow depending on how long it takes the skin to heal. Very rarely will these types of wounds scar. If it scars, the hair will not grow back. I hope this helps!

Keeping the sore spot clean and dry with a washcloth or pet wipe can also help it to heal and clear up with less irritation. Hair coming back can take a bit longer if it's been licked bald. If the area doesn't heal even with home care, or worsens, a vet visit is best to check the spot, and treat it for any infection, etc.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Skin infections may take days to weeks to heal depending on how severe the infection is and what it is caused by. Skin infections due to lick dermatitis may take up to 10 days to heal or more. The underlying issue (such as an allergy or stress/anxiety), should be identified and treated to help prevent similar occurrences in the future. I hope this helps!

My cat has a rodent ulcer. Is it healed? Will its hair grow back?

Hello, and thank you for your question and great photos. It certainly looks much improved on the mupirocin, but there still seem to be a few scabs present, so I would probably continue the cream for another week. If it is fully healed, the hair should eventually grow back. However, if the rodent ulcer is due to an underlying allergy, and the allergen is not eliminated from her environment, then her lesions may come back once the cream is discontinued. I hope this makes sense! I hope that Vivian heals well.

My cat has red sores after cutting a fur mat. How do I treat them?

She could have irritated skin and possibly a skin infection from the hair mat. You could clean the area with an antispetic wound cleaner and apply an OTC antibiotic cream and see if that helps. Otherwise, she should be examined by a vet for treatment. She may need an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to treat.

It is likely this will not heal until all the matting is removed and it is kept open to the air and bathed daily - manuka honey can help with such slow healing wounds. It is possible she may require sedation for a full groom if she is very uncomfortable and a blood test to rule ot any additional complicating factors also

Will my dog's fur grow back after a tail skin infection heals?

Hi and thanks for posting! If the infection on his tail is healing or is close to fully healed, it may take 2-4 weeks for the hair to grow back in that area. Sometimes, however if the infection is severe enough and leaves scar tissue in the area, the hair may not grow back fully. I hope this helps and best of luck!
