My cat is stressed by a new cat. Will Feliway spray or diffuser help?

Great questions! Feliway contains synthesized cat pheromones, which helps cats with anxiety and stress, and can potentially help with urine marking and scratching. In my experience, it does help and I've seen very positive results in cats whose owners have used. The cat pheromones used in Feliway are odorless to us, but is a replication of a pheromone that cats leave when they are comfortable in their environment. Every time a cat rubs against an object, they are leaving this pheromone behind to mark their territory. Using Feliway can help a cat feel more calm and comfortable, and can reduce stress related behaviors such as urine marking. I recommend using the plug in diffuser of Feliway, which can be left on continuously and lasts about four weeks. You should start seeing results within a couple of days of using it, if not sooner. I generally recommend Feliway as a calming pheromone collar or diffuser as a first line of defense. However, female cats rarely "spray or mark" with urine. Tia may be developing a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or crystals in the urine as a result of the stress from your recent move and new friends. Her increased vocalization could be a result of either stress or pain from a UTI. It is worth first taking a trip to the vet for an exam and urinalysis to assure that she does not have a medical issue causing her urinary issues. I hope that all goes well!

He may be experiencing some stress and anxiety from having another cat in the house. You could try Feliway Spray or a diffuser and see if that helps. Usually, the diffusers work well if there is conflict happening in only one or two rooms, while a collar goes everywhere with the cat. I would just start with collar for Kovu and give him some time to see if it helps. Afterwards, if you notice specific problem areas, or the collar isn't working, switching to the plug-in diffusers long-term (say near a litterbox) may help as well. Both together may be a bit too much, while not increasing efficacy any.

In addition to the Feliway diffuser I recommend an anti-anxiety supplement. I use Solliquin but there are others at PetCo that are similar. Make sure she has a quiet, private place to go to when she's nervous. I recommend not pushing her to be with you when she's anxious since she may be more aggressive during those times. Unfortunately the new cat is likely causing stress and this is a common feeling reaction to stress. She may not want to go outside as long as that other cat is around. It may be difficult to keep the other cat out of your area unless you want to purchase or build a fence. There are fences available that have curvature to the top that make it difficult for a cat to climb over. There are some things you can do at home that can help to manage her stress. Set aside 30 minutes a day for a vigorous play. Use a pheromone diffuser. There is a special prescription food made by Royal Canin called calm which may help. Use food puzzles. Give environmental enrichment. Lastly, your veterinarian has medications which can help as well. Many cats require a combination of therapies. Best of luck.
