My cat's stress meds aren't working. What are other solutions?

I agree with you. I think this is stress related behavior. Feliway is great - make sure you have enough plug-ins to cover the square footage of your house. Also, they make a Feliway collar for cats that looks like a flea collar - you may want to get that as well to put on him. As for the gabapentin. That would not have been my first choice of drug for this issue. I have had better luck with fluoxetine, buspar or amitriptyline. You need to talk to your vet about switching drugs. Five days is not a long time but I don't personally feel like that is the best drug for this issue. Of course drugs are an individual response. I would discuss this issue with your veterinarian. We definitely do not want to stop the Prozac suddenly as he could develop withdrawal symptoms. Other supplements that could help include Zylkene or a prescription cat food like c/d® Multicare Stress Feline. Acupuncture is another alternative method that may help with stress and urinary issues in cats.

So sorry that Jupiter is having this problem. You could try a Feliway diffuser and Solliquin chews and see if that helps relieve any stress and make him happier. You could also talk to your vet about trying an anti-anxiety medication, like Trazodone or Prozac to see if that helps. You can also use a product called NaturVet Quiet Moments calm treats plus melatonin for cats and see if this helps. If you are not having any success and they are still aggressive towards one another, I would recommend discussing this further with your veterinarian as anti-anxiety medications may be the next step. Hi and thanks for posting! Aww poor Fanny- I like that name and cute picture of her. If the calming supplements do not seem to do the trick after a while and Fanny is still seeming stressed, then I would talk to Fanny's veterinarian about getting her on anti anxiety medication. There are lots of different medications your veterinarian may recommend. It may take 3-4 weeks to see any differences in her behavior, but this can really help especially if all other efforts have proven to be unsuccessful. Personally I would try to reduce stress in the household by providing private, quiet areas for her to relax, use a pheromone diffuser like Feliway, try anti anxiety supplement like Solliquin, and if you need medication to stop it right away I prefer using a long acting steroid injection. Giving daily medication to a cat is stressful in itself and I don’t like to medicate cats excessively for overgrooming.
