Is my cat's strange behavior a mental disorder or just unique?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Autism or other mental conditions in young cats have not really been well-documented like in humans. However, it is possible that some cats and dogs do have some degree of mental issues. I think that this is more consistent with him having his own different personality. I would not see this as a negative. He is just a special kitten! His retained testicle is something completely different and is recommended to have surgery to remove that testicle as when left behind, it can result in cancer. But that would be a different issue unrelated to his behavior. Good luck and have a good one!

If you took her to a vet and she appears healthy than it just might be her personality. Some cats prefer to hide from people and are not very social while other cats are very social and love to be around people. If she is eating well and maintaining a healthy weight than it might not be anything to worry about. If you are still concerned than you could take her back to the vet and have them run routine bloodwork looking for potential problems.

Generally speaking, I can say I think cats are awesome, and while their behavior can be strange at time (especially when they start running around freaked out for no reason), generally they are very cool. It is hard to say exactly what may be occurring sight unseen, but I can certainly offer a couple possibilities. Exhibiting odd behavior randomly as you described can certainly be a sign of a neurological dysfunction occurring in the brain. Sometimes a psychomotor seizure can cause the occurrence of random odd behavior such as vocalizing, exhibiting fear or aggression, etc. These episodes may last a min or so but pet's with psychomotor seizures always do the same thing each time. A postictal period after the seizure may induce hunger, thirst, or a general unwell feeling prompting her to want to be by your side for comfort. A brain tumor could cause the onset of seizures. There are other possibility as well that may explain her behavior. Pain, renal disease, liver disease, or other internal organ dysfunction may contribute. An thorough veterinary exam can help diagnose Spotty as well as basic blood work and perhaps some imaging like an x-ray or ultrasound. I hope this has helped and all the best to you and Spotty!

Its hard to say if mental handicaps are possible in pets but certainly there are different intelligence levels and maturity levels. I agree with your normal vet. Black may not be like any cat you have ever had but as long as she is happy and loved, thats whats important. Kittens that are weaned early will suckle other pets and fabric but this is a benign behavior that is usually outgrown. There's nothing to do for her except keep her safe and feed her a high quality kitten food to support normal brain development. Best of luck with little Blackie!

PooR Thomas. This does sound quite strange. He could be suffering from dementia or even a seizure or neurological activity. Cats are weird because they don't always have the same type of seizure as you would think they should with convulsions. I would have your vet take a look at him to see if there is anything else that could be causing the behavior. They may be able to start him on an anti-anxiety medicine to help calm him and help him act more normal. I hope this helps !

While there could be a behavioral component to her behavior, there can be underlying medical causes (pain, GI discomfort, an infection or illness, for example) that may be causing it as well. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her behavior, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, X-rays), and start any treatment (medical or behavioral) that may be needed.
