My cat stopped eating after Augmentin. What should I feed her?

My vet prescribed Augmentin for my cat but after I gave it my cat stopped eating. I think it's because of the antibiotic and I'm not sure with what food should I give it. Now she doesn't want to eat nothing and she is afraid that I will give her Augmentin! What should I do?

Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are many reasons why Ariel could stop eating, one of which could be the antibiotic (Augmentin). The reason she is on Augmentin could be another reason why she has stopped eating. Augmentin does have a potential to be rough on the GI system, it can cause animals to have GI signs, ie vomiting, diarrhea and not wanting to eat. Often times if it is given with a meal these signs are avoided; however, just like in humans every animal responds differently to medication. Ariel may just be sensitive to Augmentin. I would recommend offering boiled, skinless chicken breast; even chicken or turkey baby food to encourage her to eat-try warming the food up as that often encourages them to eat as well. I would also speak with your veterinarian about her medication as she does need to be on a medication for the underlying condition-it just may need to be a different one. I hope Ariel starts to feel better. Good luck!

It is difficult to know, without more clinical details of the disease is affecting her, if the inappetence is due to the antibiotics or to the disease itself.
Augmentin can cause stomach upset but it is rarely the only cause of inappetence.
Please complete your question describing the problem she is having (and the dosage of antibiotics she is having) to receive a specific answer from us.

Hello. Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am not familar with the antibiotic that you specifically have mentioned. However, in the US we do use something that sounds similar, called Clavamox. Either way, all antibiotics should be given with food if at all possible to avoid upset stomach. Many cats have a reduced appetite when they have a fever, so it is not surprising that Haro Kitaru is not eating on her own. I am very sorry that she is feeling ill and has a fever. If you are able to give her a small amount of chicken or turkey baby food before administering the antibiotic that would be best. This will reduce the chance of causing an upset stomach. Or you can offer her canned tuna or chicken as well. Best of luck with your kitty. I hope she is feeling better soon.

Why is my sick senior cat not eating while on prescribed antibiotics?

I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. Why won't my kitten eat after vet visit & antibiotics for URI?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Just like you pointed out, it is possible that this is all related to the trip. I would recommend to just continue with the current plan for now. If it is just related to the trip, she should start feeling better soon. If her appetite has not improved by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as the other possibility would be that the antibiotics are causing her to lose her appetite which is a common side effect seen with some antibiotics. Good luck! I hope this is just transient and she goes back to normal.

My cat has a URI and won't eat after starting medication. What to do?

An upper respiratory infection often involves nasal discharge or swelling of the mucous membranes which can then disable the sense of smell and then cats do not want to eat. One way of helping that is to 1) remove any discharge from the nose as often as possible with a moist tissue. 2) feed her fishy canned food, preferably pate style, and warm it up in the microwave. This will intensify the aroma of the food. Clavamox tastes not so good, and sometimes it can also make a cat not hungry. However, it is absolutely necessary that your kitty eats at least a little bit every day in order not to get a serious liver disease. Try to hand feed her, if she will not eat from the bowl. If she does not eat at all she will need to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

Why won't my kitten eat canned food after taking antibiotics?

I recommend finishing out his liquid antibiotic via oral syringe if you haven’t already. If he is still eating his dry food, then I wouldn’t worry too much about him avoiding canned food for now. You can try putting a very small amount of canned food in his mouth every few days after to show him that the food no longer has a medicinal taste. With patience and time he may start eating canned food on his own again. If he is not eating at all ( including dry food), then I recommend bringing him in to see your veterinarian as complete inappetance for more than 2 days in cats can lead to a very serious condition called hepatic lipidosis. If he is not eating at all, your vet may do additional diagnostics and/or recommend anti-nausea medications and/or appetite stimulants. Good luck!

My cat is inactive and won't eat after a cat bite antibiotic.

If the antibiotic is causing some stomach upset, contact your veterinarian and request a different antibiotic. You can also ask for an injectable antibiotic, such as Convenia, which will bypass his gastrointestinal system. Subcutaneous fluids can be adminstered to maintain hydration. Warm his food slightly or mix in some plain baby food to stimulate his appetite. If he won't eat, you may need to syringe feed him. If there is an abscess from the bite wound, it needs to be lanced and drained. Pain medication may be needed. Do not medicate him with any over the counter medicines. Many can be toxic to cats.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since you are in day 1 of the antibiotics I think it would be fair to give it a bit more time to see if Musika gets better. You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. If his appetite does not improve by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as anorexia can be detrimental to a cat's health. Good luck and have a great day!
