My cat had pneumonia a month ago. Why is he still sick?

Given the elevated temperature a pneumonia die to a mixed viral and bacterial infection is highly possible. Cardiac disease should be ideally ruled out as well. Often these diseases require a longer treatment course unfortunately. That is concerning. How long ago were those test performed? Sometimes as disease progresses, it becomes easier to see on xrays or echocardiogram, so I am wondering if repeating some tests may help. If its been more than even day, things can change dramatically on Xray. A young cat (he is listed at 7 monhts old) should be able to play and be quite active without panting, certainly panting is abnormal after only mild exertion. I recommend that you take him back to your vet, or take him to a veterinary internal medicine specialist. I'm so sorry he's not feeling well! There could be fluids in the lung indeed but it could also be just the upper respiratory tract that is blocked, as it's been 2 weeks the type of antibiotics probably needs changing, i would recommend switching to an antibiotic called Zithromax which is usually the best option for this type of infection.

I'm sorry to hear that Mittens has not been doing well. I agree that Mittens' chest x-rays appear to be progressing over the past 2 weeks. At this point, either pneumonia is less likely or the bacteria causing a possible pneumonia are resistant to her current antibiotic therapy. Cancer is absolutely a suspicion due to the x-ray progression. Consider asking your vets if they have considered performing either endotracheal or transtracheal washes on Mittens, which would be able to obtain a sample of fluid or cells in the lungs. These samples could be analyzed for cytology (which may be able to diagnose cancer) or culture (to determine if bacteria is present and an appropriate antibiotic). There is a chance that Mittens may not be stable enough to undergo sedation for this procedure, but your vets will be able to examine her to determine if the risks are worth the benefits. Bronchial pneumonia can be a very serious diagnosis. Sometimes pets that have been diagnosed with pneumonia need oxygen therapy for a few days until the antibiotics kick in. He seems to be very uncomfortable because of his difficulty breathing. My recommendation is to have him seen at a facility that can provide oxygen therapy. In the mean time, you might try taking him in a steamy bathroom and patting his chest firmly until you can make him cough. This may help break up some of the mucous, but the best thing for him is oxygen therapy and continued antibiotics. Best wishes!

These are all very concerning signs but not necessarily diagnostic of fip, they are common to many fevers, infections and severe injury. Please have gus assessed urgently by your vet to stabilise his breathing and determine the underlying cause

I am sorry to hear about Sadie. If she finished her antibiotics three weeks ago and is still coughing I would definitely let her vet know and if she didn't have an x-ray after finishing her antibiotics I would recommend an x-ray now. We don't usually see dogs cough as a result of ingesting cat litter (and plenty of them do that!), so I would be concerned either the pneumonia isn't resolved or there is another underlying condition we need to treat.
